Whisperings of the devil (Shaitaan), also known as waswasa, can be a great source of temptation and negativity that can drive one towards sinning. In the path of faith, there are numerous times when one has to face influences that may make us vulnerable on the path of righteousness. The first and the biggest benefit of reciting dua for expelling the devil and his whisperings is that it allows one to feel grounded and protected by seeking refuge in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). It is a dua that directs one to stay steadfast on the path of righteousness.
To expel the devil, one has to be steadfast and relentless in pursuing the right path. The Devil may use doubt, distraction, despair, and temptations as tactics to weaken one's connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Humans are weak, and in challenging times, faith may waver. There is no strict time or specific posture that you have to make dua for expelling the devil and his whisperings. Just pray with full faith, conviction, and sincerity for Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) guidance and seek refuge in him from the evil of the world. According to the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), recite the dua for expelling the devil and his whisperings three times and then blow it on your left [Hisn al-Muslim 193].
