About Suzhou, China

Suzhou City in the Jiangsu province of China is widely known for its unique waterfront architecture, historical and cultural heritage sites, picturesque canals, and ancient gardens. The city became a foreign trade hub in the mid-19th century, which led to its establishment as an economically prosperous region in China with a heavy presence of foreigners. Even today, the city is home to many expats and foreigners who choose to work there. In 2023, the number of foreigners working in Suzhou with a work permit reached 10,210, which is not surprising considering the welcoming environment the city offers to foreign talent.

As of 2021, there were approximately 10,000 Muslim residents in Suzhou. Although the Muslim community is small, it is highly diverse and chooses to stay connected. The community mainly includes the Hui and Uyghur Muslims, along with immigrants and expats. Whether you are a Chinese-born Muslim, immigrant, or traveler, this guide is for you. It will help you find popular mosques in Suzhou along with their prayer and iqamah times so you can offer your salat on time in Suzhou.

Popular Mosques in Suzhou

Suzhou, Jiangsu, only has one purpose-built mosque. The mosque is always busy due to the eager congregations of Muslims throughout the city during prayer times. Mosques are a designated place of worship for Muslims and an integral part of their lifestyle. Although the city only has one mosque, we hope the message of Islam will continue to spread in Suzhou, and additional mosques will be opened to cater to the needs of the city's Muslim population.

Taipingfang Mosque

A mosque with 80 years of glorious history, the Taipingfang Mosque was built in 1924 and caters to the religious and social needs of Suzhou Muslims even today. The mosque was known as "Qingzhen Yixue" (Islamic Academy) initially after it was built. However, it was eventually given the name of Taipingfang Mosque.

The mosque was built by the local Muslim communities that owned slaughtering and transportation businesses just outside of Suzhou. It was completed with the help of generous donations from Muslims all over China. The donors included Muslims from Shanghai, Nanjing, and Yangzhou. A considerable donation was made by a well-known Hui businessman - Jiang Xingjie. It was Imam Ma Mingde who led the efforts to construct the mosque.

Although the mosque has been around for decades, for a short period of time in 1958, the mosque was converted into a primary school. However, fortunately, the land was returned to the Suzhou Mosque Management Committee in 1982, and it was during this year that the mosque reopened its activities to serve the Muslim population of Suzhou.

Since the Muslim population increased further, a mosque was necessary to cater to their needs. The mosque since then has received heavy government funding – making its expansion and renovation possible. Since it is the only mosque in the city, Taipingfang Mosque has become the center for all Islamic activities in Suzhou.

It is exceptionally busy during Ramadan and on Eid. The mosque hosts around 100-200 worshippers during the Friday/Jummah prayer. The mosque has three Imams. Taipingfang Mosque also provides funeral services and halal food and meat.
