Dua for Excellence of Remembrance and Glorification of Allah

When you want to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎, turn to the Dua for the excellence of eemembrance and glorification of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎. While there are many versions of this dua, they were all taught to us by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Some of the most authentic hadith records have given us duas for remembering and glorifying Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى).  One basic version of this dua has been reported in Hisnul 254 [Al-Bukhari 7/168, Muslim 4/2071]. Several other hadith sources report similar wording or phrases with such supplications, including citations in Hisnul 255 [Al-Bukhari 7/67, Muslim 4/2071], Hisnul 256 [Al-Bukhari 7/168, Muslim 4/2072], [Hisnul 258], [Muslim 4/2073] and more. Some of these masnoon duas are given below:

Degrees of Dhikr and Reciting the Dua for Excellence of Remembrance and Glorification of Allah

Some sources state that there are at least four degrees in the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). These include:

1. Expression through the tongue, but the heart is elsewhere

For instance, a person might be performing dhikr while his heart and mind are immersed in daily work. While he might be absorbed in stocking shelves or driving, his tongue is busy praising Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). This state is better than having the tongue utter useless words or potentially harmful speech.

2. The heart is involved but isn’t consistent

It requires some exertion to bring the heart into a state of remembering and glorifying Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). At any point, the heart might go back to worldly distractions and need discipline again.

3. The heart is full of love for the remembrance and glorification of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)

This is an excellent state to be in. The heart is now full of inclination towards remembering Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). It does not find complete pleasure in anything else.

4. When Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) enters the heart

This is a high spiritual level, where the heart is completely devoted to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and not just remembrance.

Benefits of Reciting the Dua for Excellence of Remembrance and Glorification of Allah

Ultimately, all acts of worship are a form of remembering and glorifying Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Here are a few benefits to remember while doing dhikr:

  • It helps to build a stronger connection with Allah
  •  We are less distracted by worldly pursuits
  • It helps us stay steadfast in our deen
  • We will attain real triumph and success as promised in the Quran (al-Anfal, 8:45)

There are several decrees in the Quran regarding Dhikr. The essence of these that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). has said “Then remember Me, I will remember you” (2:152), which tells us how remembrance will be reciprocated.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) has said in the Quran: ‘Remember your Lord inwardly with humility and reverence and in a moderate tone of voice, both morning and evening. Moreover, do not be one of the heedless.’ (al-A’raf, 7:205) In another place in the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says: ‘[They are] those who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides...’ (Al-’Imran, 3:191) The above verses tell us how we should remember Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) at all times.
