Dua for wearing a new garment

The dua for wearing a new garment is something we all should know and try to inculcate in our lifestyles because it is the Prophet Muhammad's (ﷺ) Sunnah. It is a way to express gratitude to Allah and strengthen one's religious identity.

This dua was taught by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself and is something that was reiterated by him time and again. It is narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) put on a new garment, he mentioned it by name, turban or shirt, and would then say: O Allah, praise be to Thee! as Thou hast clothed me with it, I ask Thee for its good and the good of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge in Thee from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made (Sunan Abi Dawud 4020).

In another instance, Abu Umamah (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrated that Umar bin Al-Khattab (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) wore a new garment and said this dua. Then he (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrated that he heard the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) direct to say this dua when wearing a new garment (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3560). Also narrated by Mu'adh ibn Anas (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) that if someone puts on a garment and reads this dua, their previous sins will be forgiven (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023).
