Al-Bayyina (ٱلْبَيِّنَة)

Surah Baiyyinah is the 98th Surah in the 30th Juz of the Quran. Al-Bayyinah means “The Clear Evidence” and here Allah clarifies the difference between people of the Books and the Believers of Muhammad (ﷺ). Allah describes the reaction of people of Ahl Bayt upon hearing the message of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ). Surah Al-Bayyinah consists of 8 verses and 1 Ruku and was revealed to the Prophet (ﷺ) after Hijrah in Madinah. The Surah delivers the importance of worshipping Allah only and following the right path of Muhammad (ﷺ).

Shaan e Nazool (Historical Background)

Surah Al-Bayyinah is a Madani Surah according to the majority of scholars and Quran commentators. The main reason for sending down this Surah was to clarify the purpose of sending the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ as the last and final Messenger of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. The Surah clarifies that the true religion is Islam, which earlier Messengers and Prophets preached, and that Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ also sent down the previous sacred scriptures. But the followers of the previous scriptures, as well as the idolaters, had turned to unbelief, and their state of mind could not be changed and brought back to the right path until a Messenger of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ was sent.

This Messenger (Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ) would present Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Book (the Quran) before the people, in its original form, which is free from falsehood and self-created text, as was done by the followers of earlier scriptures. It means and proves that the teachings of the previous Prophets and Messengers, and the Divine Books revealed to them, have been adulterated by the followers of these religions, the likes of Jews and Christians; hence, this Messenger (Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ) has been sent by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ with the Divine Book (the Quran) to free the minds of the Idolaters, Jews, and Christians from their false state of unbelief.

The Surah also clarifies that the followers of previous Divine Books strayed into different false beliefs because of their own mistakes, whereas the previous religions and Books contained the Right Creed, which they were supposed to follow; unfortunately, they adopted the wrong way. It implies that it was their own fault that they had deviated from the Right Path; hence Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ has sent down this Messenger (Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ), with clear guidance for humankind. It is now up to them to follow the preaching of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, but if they do not follow this Right Path, they will themselves be responsible for the consequences.    

Going further, the Surah also declares that the preaching of previous Prophets and the earlier Divine Books were the same as that of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, and the Quran. The core belief of this true religion is the purest form of Monotheism, believing from the core of the heart that there is only One Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, who is the Ultimate and Supreme Power, so everyone must worship only Him. Following monotheism, establishing Prayer (Salah) and paying Zakat are also mentioned as the basic components of true belief, i.e., Islam. Hence, the Idolators, Jews, and Christians need to realize that Islam is not something new; it is the same religion from which they have strayed only due to their own mistakes.

In the end, this Surah differentiates believers from disbelievers in the clearest way. The Surah declares that after the coming of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, and the clear guidance by way of the Quran, those who still do not believe are the worst of the Creations. And those who believe, i.e., the believers or Muslims, are the best of creations. The disbelievers are destined to be placed in Hellfire, whereas the believers will be sent to Paradise, where they will live forever.

Makki or Madni Surah

Surah Al-Bayyinah is considered a Madani Surah by most Quran Commentators and scholars. However, many others believe it was revealed in Mecca. Because this Surah addresses the misbeliefs of Jews and Christians, most scholars consider it Madani, revealed in the late 3^rd or early 4^th year AH.  

Place in the Quran

Surah Al-Bayyinah is the 98^th Surah of the Quran and is placed in the 30^th Juzz (Para). It comes after Surah Al-Qadr and before Surah Az-Zalzalah. It is the 100^th Surah in the order of revelation and is placed at number 98 in the sequence of recitation.

• Number of Verses: Surah Al-Bayyinah has 8 verses.
• Number of Ruku (Sections): The verses of Surah Al-Bayyinah are grouped into 1 Ruku (section).

Significance of Surah Al-Bayyinah  

Surah Al-Bayyinah holds great significance in Islamic teachings, as it contains the reason and purpose of sending down the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, as the last Messenger of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. Some core significances of this Surah are summarized here:

• The Message of Islam Clarified – The Surah specifically describes that Islam is not a new religion; it has been the religion of the previous Prophets, the teachings of which were also sent down through the previous scriptures. The Message is clear that Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ had not left the earlier civilizations without guidance, but they themselves made mistakes by adulterating the earlier Divine Books and strayed away from the true religion. That's why it was necessary to send the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ along with the Quran, which contains the Guidance.  
• The Essence of True Religion – In its 5th verse, the Surah also states the foundational parameters of true religion (Islam): sincerely believing in the Oneness of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, establishing prayers (Salah), and giving Alms (Zakat). This is the religion preached by the previous Prophets and sent down through earlier scriptures.
• Importance of Sincerity for Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ – The Surah is a reminder for believers that only Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ is worth Worshipping, and that the worship must be done with sincerity (Akhlas) for Him. True sincerity for Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ is one of the foundations of Islam.
• Difference Between Belief and Disbelief – The Surah clearly differentiates between belief and disbelief, which is clarified by describing the final destiny of both of them. Those who disbelieve are termed as the worst creatures, who are destined to be sent to Hellfire. Those who believe are the best creatures, who will be sent to Paradise, where they will live forever.

Theme and Subject Matter of Surah Al-Bayyinah

In the very first verse of Surah Al-Bayyinah, Allah declares the Quran to be the clear proof for all the people who disbelieve in Allah and worship the idolaters. The Surah describes the disbelievers and people of earlier scriptures, including Jews and Christians, before the arrival of the clear evidence. It highlights that both groups were in clear misguidance, lacking the proper understanding and practice of monotheism.

Even after the revelation of the message, these people denied it and divided into sects, showing their stubbornness and resistance to accept the message of Muhammad (ﷺ). The Surah highlights that the arrival of Muhammad (ﷺ) as the Messenger of Allah was the ultimate evidence of divine guidance sent by the Creator, clearing all the previous misconceptions and providing a clear path to follow. 

Allah describes the practices of believers as sincere worship of Allah alone, establishing regular prayers, and giving zakat. These practices serve as Islam's fundamental pillars of faith and righteous conduct. The Surah also contrasts the practices and fate of believers and the mushriks. Those who accept the clear evidence are among Allah's best creatures, who are promised an eternal blissful life in the gardens of Paradise, with Allah being pleased with them, while those who deny the clear evidence are among the worst of creatures and belong to Hellfire.

Virtues and Benefits of Surah Al-Bayyinah

Surah Al-Bayyinah serves as a powerful message and reminder for Muslims and non-Muslims about the clear evidence Allah has sent upon us. This Surah calls upon the people of the Books to abandon all forms of misguidance and to embrace the true religion and teachings sent by Allah through Muhammad (ﷺ). 

Anas bin Malik reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said to Ubayy bin Ka’b:

“I have been commanded to recite to you the Surah (Al-Bayyinah), which opens with these words (Lam Yakunil Ladhiyna Kafaruu) He said: Has he mentioned to you my name? He said: Yes; thereupon he shed tears of joy.” (Sahih Muslim 799e, Book 44, Hadith 173)

On another occasion, Ubayy bin Ka’b narrates:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) told him: “Indeed Allah has ordered me to recite the Quran to you.” So he recited to him: “Those who disbelieve were not going to… (98:1) and he recited in it: “Indeed the religion with Allah is that which is Hanafiyyah, Muslim, not Judaism, nor Christianity, nor Zoroastrian, whoever does good then it shall not be rejected from him.” And he recited to him: “if the son of Adam has a valley of wealth he would seek a second, and if he had a second he would seek a third, and nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dirt. And Allah pardons those who repent.” (Jami At-Tirmidhi, Book 46, Hadith 3895)

The Surah highlights the importance of believing in Allah and encourages Muslims to pray salah and give charity. It assures believers who perform righteous deeds of the gift of Paradise, which encourages Muslims to strengthen their faith, remain steadfast in their deen, and seek Allah’s pleasure.

The Quan was sent down in Arabic, which was the language of its first audience. It comprises the words of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, which were taught by the Prophet to his companions.
