Al-Ghashiya (ٱلْغَاشِيَة)

Surah Al-Ghashiyah (الْغَاشِيَة) means 'The Pall, 'The Overwhelming,' 'The Overshadowing Event' or 'The Calamity.' It is the 88h surah in the Holy Quran and consists of 26 verses in a single Ruku. It is located in the 30th and last Juz/Para. As the name suggests, these verses talk about the overwhelming event that will eventually cover the whole world and everything in it, i.e., the Day of Judgement. When it takes place, humanity will be in two groups; one will be joyous and relieved, while the other will be terrified and tired. The name of the surah comes from the word 'Al-Ghashiyah' in the first verse. 

Due to its short length and rebuking message, scholars classify this as a Makkan Surah. It was likely revealed before the Hijrat to Medina and came as a warning to those who rejected the message of the Prophet (ﷺ). At the point of this surah's revelation, the Prophet (ﷺ) was still preaching the word of Islam to the polytheists in Mecca. However, this would also be the period where the preaching was more public rather than among a select few. The people heard the message loud and clear but were still ignoring it. Not only were they being thoughtless and careless, but they insulted the Prophet (ﷺ), his family, and the Muslims who followed the straight path. The surah also clarifies that the Prophet (ﷺ) is only there to remind the people. He is not responsible for forcing everyone to accept the message; Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is the sole Judge of everyone. 

Shaan e Nazool (Historical Background)

Surah Al-Ghashiyah is a Makki Surah, which was revealed during the early phase of the Prophethood of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ. The theme and subject of this Surah also show that this Surah was revealed when the Prophet had started inviting the Meccans to the Message of Islam, openly and publicly. The Message was clear: the Oneness of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ (Tawheed), and the certainty of the happening of the Day of Resurrection, when the whole mankind will be presented before Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ for final accountability. The disbelievers of Mecca initially left this Message unheeded. With the passage of time and repeated preaching by the Prophet, the disbelievers started rejecting both these concepts, openly and mockingly.

With this background, Surah Al-Ghashiyah was sent down, with a specific purpose of addressing the objections of disbelievers and emphasizing the core Islamic beliefs: Tawheed and Day of Qiyamah. The Surah starts with a powerful message for the disbelievers, asking them, have you not received the news about the Day of Qiyamah (the news of the overwhelming event). Then the happenings on that Day are described with a clear distinction between the believers and the disbelievers. Describing the physical appearance, body language, and facial expressions of both, the destiny of both is clarified convincingly. The faces of disbelievers, on that Day, will be disappointed, burning in scorching heat, and they will look totally exhausted, realizing their fate: a permanent place in Hell. Contrary to that, the faces of believers will be fresh and glowing with bliss, seeing their destiny in Paradise.

After showing the scenario of the Day of Resurrection, the Surah then invites disbelievers to reflect upon the four clear signs of the Power and Authority of Allah, سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, the camels, which are the sole source of their travel in the desert, the sky, mountains, and vast desert (or earth), which they see daily, especially when traveling. Inviting them to reflect upon these big signs of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, the Surah asks them why don't you ponder upon these things? Are these created on their own, or has someone created them? Who is the Creator of these things, and more importantly, Who manages them to stay intact?

In the end, Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Commands the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ that you should not worry if the disbelievers are not paying heed to your preaching, your duty is only to convey the Message, and you are not required to force them to come to the truth. They are destined to be presented before Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ on the Day of Qiyamah, and will have to face the consequences, which is inevitable.

In short, Surah Al-Ghashiyah explains the core Islamic beliefs, Tawheed, and the Day of Resurrection, in beautiful and typical Quranic language.

Makki or Madni Surah

Surah Al-Ghashiyah is a Makki Surah, revealed during the early days of the Prophethood of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, when he started preaching publicly.

Place in the Quran

Surah Al-Ghashiyah is the 88^th Surah of the Quran, and is placed in the 30^th Juzz (Para). It comes after Surah Al-A’ala and before Surah Al-Fajr. It is the 68^th Surah in the order of revelation, and falls at number 88 in the sequence of recitation.

• Number of Ruku (Sections): Surah Al-Ghashiyah is grouped into 1 Ruku (section).

Significance of Surah Al-Ghashiyah  

Surah Al-Ghashiyah was revealed during the early days of Islam, when the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ started preaching openly, but the disbelievers were not inclined to accept two of the basic Islamic beliefs: Tawheed and the Day of Resurrection. This Surah specifically addresses this situation; hence, it holds great significance in Islamic teachings.

• The very first verse of this Surah serves as a powerful reminder for the reader about the truth and certainty of the occurrence of the Day of Resurrection, when the entire humankind will be presented before Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ to face the final accountability.
• The Surah depicts a clear picture of the Day of Qiyamah, dividing the entire humankind into two distinct groups. The first group comprises the disbelievers, whose faces will be downcast, dejected, and tired of the fruitless efforts that they had been making in their worldly life. On the other hand, the scenario of the second group, comprising the believers, is shown as the happiest. The first group will be sent to Hell, whereas the second will be rewarded with a pleasant life in Paradise. It reminds and urges us to have full faith in the occurrence of the Day of Judgment, and to do good deeds in this life so as to get rewarded with a place in Paradise.
• The Surah also invites us to reflect upon clear signs of Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ Powers and Authority, Who created this earth, sky, mountains, and everything in this Universe. Recitation of these verses of the Surah strengthens our Iman (Faith) on Tawheed and the Day of Resurrection.
• In the last verses of the Surah, it is mentioned with clarity that the role of the Prophet is just to convey the Message, whereas those who do not pay heed to this Message will face the consequences when they will be presented before Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ for the final accountability. So, we as Muslims must obey what has been conveyed to us by the Prophet through the Quran and his Sunnah. That is the only path leading to success.

The Surah also holds a virtuous status, as the Prophet used to recite this Surah in the Friday and Eid Prayers. This Sunnah practice is mentioned in Hadith 878a of Sahih Muslim (Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite on two 'Ids and in Friday prayer: " Glorify The name of Thy Lord, the Most High" (Surah lxxxvii.), and:" Has there come to thee the news of the overwhelming event" (lxxxviii.). And when the 'Id and Jumu'a are combined on a day, he recites these two (surahs) in both the prayers. So, reciting it frequently in Friday and Eid Prayers may bring huge rewards, in this world as well as in the Hereafter.

Themes and Subject Matter of Surah Al-Ghashiyah (الْغَاشِيَة)

In response to the difficult situation in Mecca, this surah comes with at least three broad topics. Let's discuss each of them in turn:

Good And Evil

In the first part of the surah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) describes the differences among the paths that one can take during their lifetime. There are two main paths–good and evil–to choose from. Next, there's a description of how the non-believers will experience hell. Overall, Surah Al-Ghashiyah invites the reciter and reader to meditate on their actions. Will their current lifestyle and deeds take them to the gardens of Jannah or the terrible fires of Jahannam? The warning is that people should start taking heed and think about the consequences of their actions. Our aim should be to get ready for the Day of Judgement, not to get lost in the enjoyment of the dunya. If they do stay thoughtless and heedless, however, an overwhelming calamity will soon envelop them with fear. 

Allah’s (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) Creation

The next theme in the surah makes us aware of Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) creations. The earth, the sky, and the mountains are mentioned as signs that provide evidence for God's existence. If humankind cannot see that these wondrous creations were made by someone, then they will be punished in the hereafter. The verses also give us some details about the coming calamity, especially regarding the groups who go to the heaven or hell. They ask whether people cannot see Tawheed in signs like the camels, whose bodies are perfectly fit for survival in the desert. Do they not see how the sky is stretched out, the earth is spread, and the mountains stand tall? All of this could not have occurred without the intervention of an All-Powerful Being. Again, the focus is on urging people to meditate on the facts around them. 

Direct Message to the Prophet (ﷺ)

In the final part of the surah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) directly addresses the Messenger (ﷺ). The verses then clarify that the Prophet (ﷺ) only plays the role of a messenger, not a controller. This message absolves the Prophet (ﷺ) from any responsibility for people's beliefs. He is not to blame for anyone's refutation of the truth. His task is merely to spread the message and exhort people to become believers. In the end, everyone will be called back to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى)‎ and be punished or rewarded. 

Virtues and Benefits of Surah Al-Ghashiyah (الْغَاشِيَة)

Several Hadith have mentioned Surah Al-Ghashiyah and its benefits. Reciting the surah reminds us about the inevitability of Qiyamah and the accounting of our actions. We may then reflect more upon our deeds and whether they are worthy of heaven. 

Samra ibn Jundab narrated that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in the Friday prayer: "Glorify the name of your most high Lord" (Surah 87) and 'Has the story of the overwhelming event reached you?' (Al-Ghashiyah). [Sunan Abi Dawood]

There are many other Sahih Hadith that detail how the Prophet (ﷺ) would recite Surah Al-Ghashiyah in Friday Khutbahs. The Muslim Ummah should also make a habit of reciting this surah and reflecting on it regularly. This way, we get a frequent reminder not to stay heedless and busy with the world. We need to pay attention to the message of the Quran and our beloved Prophet (ﷺ). Staying ignorant or thoughtless about such important things can result in severe punishment in the next life. Since we need to prepare for eternity, it's essential to focus on the wonders of creation and surrender to the Master behind it all.
