Surah Al-Hadid was revealed in Medina in the fourth or fifth year after Hijrat-e-Medina. By that time, the newly established Islamic State in Medina was progressing and gaining political and social strength. But this new and relatively small State was still under threat from the disbelievers of the Meccans and other pagan tribes. At the same time, the Islamic State was also facing internal challenges from hypocrites. Hence, it was the time when Muslims were to be reminded and encouraged to:
With that historical context, Surah Al-Hadid was revealed, directly addressing the Muslim community of Medina. Hence, the Surah begins with the Attributes of Allah, سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, as a reminder for the listeners that He is directly conversing with them (the Muslims and hypocrites of Medina). Thereafter, the audience is reminded of some of their core responsibilities towards the cause of Islam, as follows:
In short, the Surah Al-Hadid was sent down to remind the believers to be always ready to fight in the way of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, both spiritually and materially.
Surah Al-Hadid is a Madni Surah, revealed in the fourth or fifth year after the Prophet's migration to Medina.
Surah Al-Hadid is the 57th Surah of the Quran and is placed in the 27th Juzz (Para). It is placed after Surah Al-Waqiyah and before Surah Al-Mujadila. It is the 94th Surah in the order of revelation, and 57th in the sequence of recitation.
Surah Al-Hadid holds great spiritual significance and virtues in Islam, which are summarized below:
Surah Al-Hadid is one of the Surahs, remembered as the “Musabbahat”, i.e., the Surahs that start with the word سَبَّحَ, glorifying attributes of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. The Surah begins with the declaration that everything on earth and heaven, life and death, and literally everything is created and only belongs to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. It serves the purpose of strengthening the core belief in Islam, the concept of Tawhid.
The Surah also reminds us that the best thing a person can earn in their worldly life is the reward of spending in the way of Allah, سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, and for the cause of spreading His Message of Islam. The Surah specifically describes that spending (both life and wealth) for the cause of Islam is just like a loan that will be returned with unbelievable profit by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ on the Day of Judgement. The Surah is therefore a source of encouragement to sacrifice our lives and wealth for Islam.
A clear differentiation between the believers and hypocrites is described in this Surah, warning the hypocrites of the consequences they are destined to face on the Day of Judgment. While the believers will be rewarded with a special light, the hypocrites will be left without it, to face the severity of the Day of Judgement. The lesson for mankind is that the best way of life in this world is to remain steadfast and firm on faith and not hesitate to spend in the way of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.
The Surah reminds the believers of the temporary nature of worldly life, encouraging them not to rely on the worldly benefits, explaining that everything ultimately belongs to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. The assets in this world belonged to someone else in the past, and are today in the possession of a certain person. After their death, it will be possessed by someone else. Hence, everything in this universe only belongs to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. Muslims are encouraged to get prepared for the life hereafter and not get affiliated with worldly life.
The Surah describes the importance of Al-Hadid (the Iron), symbolizing it for strength and civilization based on justice. It implies that the civilization not only needs spiritual guidance but, at the same time, it has to be well-equipped with the necessities of life to establish a strong and just community.
Hadith 3406 of Jami At-Tirmidhi reports that the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ used to recite the “Musabbihat” (the group of Surahs that start with the word “Sabbah”, including Surah Al-Hadid.
Translation - The Prophet (ﷺ) would not sleep until he had recited Al-Musabbihat, and he would say: "In them is an Ayah that is better than a thousand Ayah."
Hence, reciting it before going to bed holds great significance, especially for following the Sunnah of the Prophet.
The surah motivates Muslims to spend their riches in Allah's way – In Islamic history, there was a significant point where the believers were engaged in a life-and-death struggle against paganism. The surah was revealed to the Prophet (ﷺ) so that the Muslims could be encouraged to make financial sacrifices for their faith. It also made them realize that practicing Islam was not merely verbal affirmations but ultimately meant making sacrifices and putting all of their faith in Allah and Islam.
The surah emphasizes that whatever wealth one possesses is from Allah alone and will go back to Him. The only wealth that will come as any use to man is the wealth he will spend in the way of his Lord. Moreover, the surah also states how those who spend their money on the cause of Islam when it is struggling and enduring times of hardship will be held superior to those who spend in Islam's way when it is already thriving.
Allah also says in surah Al-Hadeed that whatever is spent in His cause is a loan and will be returned manifold to the believer along with rewards and blessings. Allah also promises the believers that light will be bestowed upon those on the final day who are spent in the way of Allah. However, those hypocrites who stood by and watched and, in return, only served their interests will be counted among the disbelievers and be dealt with accordingly.
The surah reminds the believers that the life of this world is merely temporary – be it its pastimes, sports, decorations, and other luxuries. However, the life of the hereafter is everlasting. Therefore, they should strive for paradise and ensure that they do not lose themselves in their wealth and worldly affairs, as that will certainly not do them any good.
Whatever one encounters in the world – be it good or hardship is from Allah. A good believer must not lose hope in hardship and be consumed by arrogance and pride in the good time as those are the characteristics of the hypocrites. Allah also reminds the people that he sent down His messengers, book, and divine law so that people ensure justice in all their affairs and He also sent down iron so that its power may be used to ensure justice is maintained and falsehood perishes.
Allah also says how Prophet Isa brought several moral improvements in his nations. And now Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has been sent as the last messenger, and those who put faith in his message and fear the accountability of Allah will be met with Allah's mercy.
Surah Al-Hadeed encourages believers to remain patient and steadfast during times of hardship as they, like blessings and good times, are also from Allah. The surah also emphasizes the significance of charity, especially if it is done in the way of Allah and for the cause of strengthening Islam.
Surah Al-Hadeed raises an important point regarding the implementation of justice. Allah calls upon the believers to ensure justice and fairness among themselves and their society. Moreover, it also encourages the believers to be grateful for Allah's blessings upon them whether they are seen or unseen, and seek His mercy and forgiveness as He is the most merciful. The theme of the surah motivates individuals to seek Allah's mercy repent from the weight of their sins and strive in the way of Allah – monetarily and otherwise.
Muhammad Shafi Deobandi, in his tafsir, Ma'ariful Quran, reported that "It is recorded in Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Nasa'i that Sayyidna' Irbad Ibn had said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite Al-Musabbihat before he went to sleep and said: 'In them, there is a verse that is more meritorious than a thousand verses.' Thus, recite surah Al Hadid and the rest of the Al-Musabbihat surahs as much as you can to find that meritous verse and benefit from it in this life and the hereafter.
