Prayer or Salah is the most important pillar of Islam after the testament of faith (Shahadah). Out of the five pillars of Islam, Salah is the one that has been mentioned repeatedly in the Quran. There are more than 65 verses in different Surahs of the Quran, where the believers are urged to ensure the performance of Salah, such as verses 3, 4, 43, 45, 83, 110, 153, 177, 238, 239, and 277 of Surah AL-Baqarah. Similarly, there are many verses in Surah An-Nisa, Al-Maidah, Al-An'am, Al-Ar'af, and more. These multiple references to salah in the Quran reflect the importance of Salah in Islamic theology.
While the Quran emphasizes the importance of maintaining the practice of regular prayer, it simultaneously describes its virtues and impact on the life of a Muslim. In addition to the Quran, the importance of Salah is also mentioned in many Hadiths, as well. Hadith 528 of Sahih Al-Bukhari describes the importance of Salah as follows:
Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?" They said, "Not a trace of dirt would be left." The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds."
Virtues and Benefits of Salah
The virtues and benefits of Salah or prayer are enormous. Some of those are listed here.
Five Prayers a Day
Offering the five daily salahs is obligatory for Muslims. The five prayers a day were made obligatory for the Muslims during the historical journey of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to the heavens during the night of Isra (Meraj). During his ascension to the heavens on the night of Isra, Allah commanded the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) that five daily prayers are mandatory for all Muslims. This has been mentioned in Hadith 349 of Sahih Al-Bukhari in detail. It is mentioned in this hadith that initially, fifty daily prayers were Commanded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), but at the request of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), the number of daily prayers was reduced to five.
Timings of the Five Daily Prayers
The five prayers Muslims must offer daily are Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. Although there is no specific mention of the times of five prayers in the Quran, there are some verses that describe the timings of the Salah as under.
Verse 114 of Surah Hud points towards the Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha prayers.
Establish prayer ˹O Prophet˺ at both ends of the day and in the early part of the night. Surely, good deeds wipe out evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful.
Verses 39 and 40 of Surah Qaf describes the Fajr, Asr, and Isha Prayers.
So be patient ˹O, Prophet˺ with what they say. And glorify the praises of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset. And glorify Him during part of the night and after the prayers.
Verses 17 and 18 of Surah Al-Rum point towards the Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, and Maghrib Prayers.
So, glorify Allah in the evening and the morning. All praise is for Him in the heavens and the earth—as well as in the afternoon and at noon.
So, a collective description of these verses specifies the timings of the five obligatory prayers a day: the Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha Prayers.
Importance of Offering Prayers at the Correct Time
Muslims must offer salah at the correct time. Moreover, it is preferable for Muslims to offer their salah as early as possible rather than delaying the salah. The importance of offering salah on time is evident from the following hadith:
Narrated `Abdullah: I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) "Which deed is the dearest to Allah?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times. (Hadith 527 of Sahih Al-Bukhari)
Hence, offering prayers at appropriate times, and that too at the earliest time, is very important. That's why the timings of the five daily prayers need to be observed strictly. The timings of prayers are associated with the movement of the sun; for example, Fajr has to be offered before sunrise, and Maghrib needs to be done at the time of sunset.
But the sunrise and sunset times are different for each location, City, or town. That makes it even more important for us to ensure that we offer prayers strictly as per the local timings of sunrise and sunset. Download the Muslim and Quran Mobile Application for prayer times notifications and never miss your salah again.
