Masjid Istiqlal Osaka

Masjid Istiqlal Osaka is a comparatively new mosque in Osaka, Japan. The mosque is the initiative of the Indonesian Muslim community in Osaka. It was inaugurated in March 2023. The mosque is named after Masjid Istiqlal in Jakarta, showing the connection to the Indonesian community. The mosque is located conveniently between the JR Imamiya/Shin-Imamiya Stations and Osaka Metro Daikokucho/Hanazonocho Stations. Thus, it is easily accessible by public transport. Since it is a purpose-built mosque, the exterior is beautifully designed with Islamic design. The 5-story building is adorned with black and white tiles that say Allah and Muhammad in Arabic against a beige backdrop. The name of the mosque is written in bold golden in English, Japanese, and Indonesian languages. On the left and right of the mosque, Allah and Muhammad in golden metalwork adorn the mosque’s facade. Three arches are also prominently displayed, a further nod to Islamic architecture.

The first floor of the mosque is the ablution (wudu) area for men. The founder of the mosque, Mr Herizal, has a vision to establish a halal food shop and an Islamic book archive on the first floor in the coming years. The second floor is dedicated to women – it has a prayer area that can accommodate 300 women, a waiting room, and a women-only lift. The third and fourth floors have prayer areas for men. Each floor has a prayer area that faces Mecca and has the space to accommodate 300 worshippers. There is a waiting room or multipurpose room on each floor. The fifth floor is reserved for an Islamic school for children and sleeping quarters for teachers in the mosque.

The mosque organizes five daily salah with jama’ah (congregation) every day. It also organizes Friday sermons and prayers. In 2023, the mosque hosted its first-ever Taraweeh and Eid salah in the congregation. Muslims from all over Japan, especially Indonesian Muslims, came to offer their prayers in the mosque, and around 2700 people offered their prayers. The Masjid also serves as an educational institution providing Islamic education for children and adults, helping them learn about their religion and making a stronger connection with their faith. It provides various services for the Muslim community in Osaka, including Janazah services, Nikkah Services, and Donations services. It helps the Muslims to perform these rituals according to Shariah law. You can also book animals for slaughter to fulfil your Eid-ul-Adha obligation.
