Although Japan is a secular country with Muslims being a minority, Muslims have had a presence in Japan for decades, which is why Muslims have established many mosques all around the country so they can pray, engage in worship, and unite to celebrate Islamic festivals in their place of worship. So, Sendai has several options all over the city where Muslims can pray and also receive Islamic education.
Located near the Itsutsubashi metro station, the Sendai Central Prayer Room was established to cater to people working in the area who were unable to cover large distances to other mosques in Sendai in times for their prayers. The prayer room functions as a mosque and is managed by a Bangladeshi Muslim businessman in Sendai.
The eventual goal of the management of the prayer room is to eventually convert the prayer room into a mosque so it has the capacity for additional worshippers. However, the prayer room is highly active with Muslim worshippers even now, which is why the Jummah/Friday prayer is divided into two time slots to accommodate the worshippers' capacity. There is also a small collection of books available in the corner of the room, along with the blessed Quran for worshippers to read. Moreover, there is a halal mart located near the prayer room for Muslims to shop at! You can also get a visual tour of the Sendai Central Prayer Room covered by Japan Halal TV by clicking here.

The Islamic Culture Center of Sendai was established in 1985 when the growing Muslim population of Sendai did not have an Islamic center that they could turn to meet their religious needs. The center is a non-political and non-profit center working to cater to the needs of Muslim residents of the city. The center is also focused on promoting Islamic culture in Japanese society and educating the Japanese population about the principles of Islam.
The center works in cooperation with the Islamic Center of Tokyo and is the only Islamic center in Japan that teaches Muslims how to read the blessed Quran. Several Islamic classes are also offered by the center to promote Islamic education among Muslims in Sendai, so they stay in touch with their faith and are aware of its teachings even if they're residing in a secular society.
A Quran class is held at the mosque every Saturday evening. However, it is open to males only. However, other classes are open to all. You can keep yourself updated on the Islamic classes offered at the Islamic Culture Center of Sendai through the center's website.

There are around 230,000 Muslims in Japan who are happy to call the country of cherry blossoms their home. Most of the Muslim population in Japan consists of expats or immigrants from South Asia who moved to Japan to find employment and escape the shackles of poverty back home. Most of these immigrants or expats, however, gradually decided to make Japan a permanent home and settled down in different cities like Tokyo and Sendai.
Reports, however, state that the Muslim population in Japan has also risen due to many Japanese natives marrying Muslims and reverting to Islam. Japan also has a Japanese Muslim Association that assists Muslim reverts and other Muslims who live in the country. The association has done plenty of work over the years all over Japan to help Muslims in the country adjust to the culture of Japan. The first Muslim cemetery in Enzan was established in 1969. Halal certifications to restaurants and relevant businesses were also first provided in 1969.
