Historical Mosque

The historical mosque, or the old mosque, was initially built in 1823 and has a significant history. The mosque was built on land that was owned by a Tatar businessman to cater to the religious and social needs of the growing Muslim population in Moscow city. However, there were conditions attached to the mosque's establishment that included that the mosque would be referred to as a "Muslim prayer house" and the building would be similar to the houses in the neighborhood. The conditions were met and a madrassa was also added in 1915.

The Soviets, unfortunately, shut down the mosque in 1939. Luckily, the mosque was reopened and opened its doors to the public in 1993 again. The minaret was also rebuilt, and the madrassa remains functional today. The mosque also offers social services such as nikkah (between a Muslim man and a Muslim woman only; nikkah with a non-Muslim woman is not permitted), name-giving, Islamic adoption, and funeral prayers. These services are provided seven days a week with no need for an appointment.

Additionally, educational services are also provided for Muslims in Moscow to ensure they're aware of the principles and teachings of their religion. The following courses are offered:

  • Fundamentals of Islam
  • Classical Arabic
  • Quran recitation

There are two cafeterias in the mosque compounds and a halal food shop. There are also several halal eateries and dining options nearby. The mosque's capacity overflows during certain days, which may lead to some worshippers praying outside the mosque – this can be challenging for people who are sensitive to extreme weather conditions. Therefore, make sure to visit the mosque 5 to 10 minutes before prayer time.
