Surah Al-Mulk

Surah Al-Mulk, or Surah Mulk, the 67th Surah, is one of the most famous Surahs of the Quran. It constitutes 30 verses (Ayahs). It is a Makki Surah divided into two ruku', situated in the 29th Juz (Para) of the Holy Quran. Surah Mulk takes its name from the word 'Al-Mulk' referring to the 'Dominion' and 'Sovereignty' of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). The Surah is also known as Tabaraka (Blessed is He), Al-Mani'ah (The Preventer), Al-Waqiya (The Protector), Al-Munjiya (The Rescuer), and Al-Manna'a (The extreme preventer). The exact circumstances around the revelation of this Surah are not exactly known, but it is one of the earliest Surahs of the Makkan period.

Themes and Subject Matter of Surah Mulk

The main theme of Surah Mulk revolves around the absolute sovereignty of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and the perfection with which He has assembled this universe. The Surah also briefly introduces the teachings of Islam, a characteristic of Makki Surahs with the purpose that they are most easily understood and practiced by the people.

The Surah talks about the well-organized nature of the universe and asks man to detect any fault in it whatsoever and that even upon tireless efforts, one can find no fault in this well-made system. It also apprises man of the purpose of his life and the reason for which he has been sent into this world. The Surah invariably reiterates the fact that whatever a person may seem around him, does he not ponder and question how everything came into being and that they don't find the existence of a Creator without Whom none of this would exist?

Surah Mulk discusses the truth about heaven and hell. It addresses the disbelievers and tells them about the dreadful consequences they would face due to their ignorance of Islam and their negligent and disregarding attitude towards Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions.

Virtues and Benefits of Surah Mulk

Surah Mulk is one of the most important Surahs of the Quran. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) mentioned this Surah as the interceder on behalf of its reader in the grave unless and until they are forgiven. The recitation of this Surah before sleeping is described to wipe clean our sins and ensure our forgiveness.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "There is a surah in the Qur'an, with thirty verses, which will intercede for its companion (the one who recites it) until he is forgiven: Tabarakal-ladhi bi yadihil mulk (Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the Dominion)." - Sunan Ibn Majah 3786

Surah Mulk increases the good deeds of a person and removes his sins.

Jabir (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would not go to sleep until he had recited the chapters, "The revelation of the Book, in which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds" (32:1) and "Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion, and has power over all things," - Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2892
