About Milton Keynes, UK

The name may sound like it was taken straight out of an economics textbook, but Milton Keynes is a city in south central England. With no connection to either J.M. Keynes or Milton Friedman, the city falls under the administrative control of Buckinghamshire County. Unlike most cities in the UK, which have ancient roots, Milton Keynes is a relatively new settlement. Named after a nearby village, the city was designed to reduce the burden on London by creating an urban haven close by.

Milton Keynes is a planned urban project. Development began in the city in the 1960s. The project was such a success that the population of the city grew from 60,000 to 249,000 within a span of four decades. Since it is a planned city, Milton Keynes is very well-organized with a vast network of roads to avoid traffic jams. The residential area is separate from commercial centers. The city has all the basics: art galleries, theatres, and multiplexes. Bletchley Park, an expansive estate located in Bletchley, is also in Milton Keynes and became famous after it was used as an office for Allied code-breakers during the Second World War.

The population of Milton Keynes is nearly 250,000, and Asians make up 10.6% of the total population. Furthermore, Muslims are 5.9% of the total population, which is lower than the national average of 6.5%. Still, the number is quite high, and it means that Muslims in the city have a large community they can connect with. Prayer times in Milton Keynes are easily accessible through mobile app notifications, like Muslim and Quran. Additionally, plenty of mosques are located in Milton Keynes, so Muslims can conveniently find a place to offer salah.

Popular Mosques in Milton Keynes, UK

There are plenty of mosques in Milton Keynes, since the city has a sizeable Muslim presence. The following are five major mosques you can find in Milton Keynes:

Al-Rawdha Mosque

Al-Rawdha Mosque in Milton Keynes is the heart of the Mulsim community in the city. Al-Rawdah means ‘the garden’ in Arabic. The name holds great significance as it derives from the name given to an area within the Masjid-e-Nabvi in Madinah. Sprawling an impressive 10,000 sq. meters, the three-story building of the Al-Rawdha Mosque is large enough for prayer halls, restrooms, and a madrassah.

The mosque has ample parking space, which is needed because many worshippers visit the mosque daily, and over 500 children are enrolled in the madrassah. The exterior may not be traditional; however, on the inside, the mosque is just like any other mosque, with its peaceful atmosphere. On the outside, the mosque appears as any other corporate building with a glass façade. On the inside, however, the large glass windows let in the bright sunlight from all angles, which makes the entire place glow.
