Az-Zumar (ٱلزُّمَر)

Surah Az-Zumar is the 39th surah of the Holy Quran. It is a relatively long surah with 75 verses and 8 rukus. It is a Makki surah, which is named Az-Zumar, meaning the 'The Crowd' or 'The Throng,' referring to the groups of people who will be gathered on the day of Qayamah. The surah is a powerful reminder that there is only one God, i.e., Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Its purpose was to refresh the memory of the Meccans that there is no one worthy to be worshipped except Allah. While stressing the importance of Tawhid, the surah also offers a message of hope. It assures believers that Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) mercy is vast and encompasses all. Even those who have committed sins are encouraged not to despair of Allah's forgiveness but to repent and turn towards Him sincerely.

In and around 615-617 A.D., the Arabic society was mostly polytheistic. The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) was spreading the message of Islam to a people who had been worshipping many idols for centuries. Thus, the Prophet and the newly converted Muslims were being ill-treated by the Meccans. In the context of this severe persecution, Rasool Allah (ﷺ) gave permission to some of his companions under the leadership of Ja'far bin Abi Talib to migrate to Habsha (Abyssinia) after surah Az-Zumar was revealed. The themes of this surah resonate with the experiences of the early Muslims during the period of their migration to Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia).

Shaan e Nazool (Historical Background)

Surah Az-Zumar was revealed during the later stages of Prophet Muhammad's صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ stay in Mecca, most probably shortly before the migration of Muslims to Habshah (known as the first migration of Muslims). It was the time when the persecutions by Quraysh were at their peak, the victims of which were mostly the poor and weak Muslims. Despite consistent preaching, the disbelievers were not turning towards Islam; instead, their tyranny against Muslims was increasing day by day.

Surah Az-Zumar was therefore revealed with a specific purpose, as at that stage, Muslims were not only facing intense opposition and persecution, but their life in Mecca was made terribly hard by Quraysh. Moreover, despite repeated preaching by the Prophet, the disbelievers were not willing to leave Idol worship, which by that time had become a deep tradition and compulsory part of their society. They also used to say that they also believe in and worship Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, but it is necessary to use Idols as intermediaries, so they may help them to get closeness to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, which was a clear act of shirk (partnering others with Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Under these circumstances, Surah Az-Zumar was revealed to answer some of the most critical but wrong beliefs of the disbelievers of Mecca, the Quraysh. The content of this Surah is mainly addressed to the disbelievers, whereas at different points it also addresses the believers. Some of the wrong perceptions and beliefs of the Quraysh, addressed through this Surah, include:

  • Refuting False Justification for worshiping Idols – At the very beginning of the Surah, the false justification of Quraysh for worshiping Idols is categorically refuted, establishing that only Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ is Worth Worshiping, without associating partners to Him, and that He does not need any intermediaries in that context.
  • Permission to Migrate – In view of the extreme persecution, Muslims were advised that Allah’s سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ earth is vast, so if they are feeling it difficult to perform their religious duties in Mecca and life is becoming difficult for them here, then they should migrate to a safer place, where they can live and worship peacefully. With that express permission, the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ advised his followers to leave Mecca and migrate to Habshah.
  • Refuting Misconception About Guidance and Misguidance – At that stage, the disbelievers of Mecca had taken the plea that whatever they do was allowed and guided (or misguided) by Allah, سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, which was obviously a wrong and misleading concept. The Surah clearly pointed out that Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ had sent Prophets to guide humankind. They had been teaching their people what was right and what was not. So, the choice is yours to pick the right path. If you chose the wrong way, your misguidance is not an excuse, as you had been given the guidance to follow the right path. Hence, pretending that misguidance is sanctioned by Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ is totally a wrong and misleading perception.
  • Distinguishing Between Believers and Disbelievers – Surah Az-Zumar describes a detailed comparison between various realities, showing contrast between the believers and disbelievers, establishing that both of them cannot be the same. The Surah describes a comparison between knowledge and ignorance, gratitude and arrogance, and sincere worship and shirk (or hypocrisy).

In that historical backdrop, the Surah was revealed to address all such issues. Side by side, the concept and reality of the Day of Judgment and accountability are also described, with a strict warning to disbelievers that when the Day comes, no one will be able to escape from the severe punishment.

Makki or Madni Surah

Surah Az-Zumar is a Makki Surah, revealed during the later phase of the Prophet Muhammad’s صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ stay in Mecca, most probably a little before the first migration of Muslims, the migration to Habshah.

Place in the Quran

It is the 39th Surah of the Quran. It falls in Juzz (Para) 23 and 24. It is placed after Surah Sa’d and before Surah Ghafir. It is the 59th Surah in the order of revelation, whereas in the sequence of recitation, it is placed at number 39.

  • Number of Verses: Surah Az-Zumar has 75 verses.
  • Number of Ruku (Sections): Surah Az-Zumar is grouped into 8 Rukus (sections).

Significance of Az-Zumar

Some of the key significances of Surah Az-Zumar are summarized here:

  • Strong Refutation of Shirk

In Surah Az-Zumar, the concept of Oneness of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ (Tawheed) is strongly described, categorically refuting all forms of shirk (associating partners with Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Although the concept is a central theme in almost all Meccan Surahs, here in Surah Az-Zumar it is articulated in the strongest terms, specifically to refute shirk. The disbelievers took the plea that they also believe in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ but they worship Idols to get closer to Him. This wrong perception is strongly refuted in this Surah, establishing that firm belief in the Oneness of Allah, سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, is the core of the Islamic faith.

  • Giving Hope to Those Who Repent

While mentioning the consequences of disbelief, in the shape of severe punishment on the Day of Judgment, this Surah also provides a hope for those who, at any stage in their life on this earth, repent, seeking Mercy from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ. The scenario of the Day of Judgment is particularly described in the Surah, where the disbelievers would be sent to Hell in groups (Az-Zumar). The scene is described here that they would ask for Mercy from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ at that stage, but it would be of no avail, as the opportunity of repentance was only available during their life in this world. In contrast, those who believed and spent their life on this earth on the right path, and those who repented and remained steadfast on it, will be sent to paradise. They will be welcomed by the angels of paradise and will live there forever. So, this Surah gives hope to those who opt to repent during their worldly life.

  • Comparison Between Believers and Non-believers

This Surah also draws a clear line between believers and disbelievers. By drawing comparisons across various aspects, such as gratitude versus arrogance and knowledge versus ignorance, it is clearly established that believers and disbelievers cannot be equal in status.

  • Ethical and Spiritual Guidance

Surah Az-Zumar is a rich source of ethical and spiritual guidance for the believers. It underscores the importance of patience, encouraging Muslims to cultivate the habit of patience during the hardest phases of life. Similarly, the Surah emphasizes the importance of humility and gratitude while condemning ingratitude and arrogance. Above all, this Surah advises the Muslims to enter into Islam wholeheartedly. It demands and teaches that one should adopt the Islamic faith, in its entirety, accepting everything Islam teaches, instead of being selective in adopting the Islamic faith.

Theme and Subject Matter of Surah Az-Zumar (ٱلزُّمَر)

The theme of Surah Az-Zumar (الزُّمَر) is built on the story of the creation of Adam and all his offspring. Focusing on the Divine power to create one creation after another from the darkness of the womb. Right at the start of Surah Az-Zumar, in verse no. 6, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says:

He created you (all) from a single person: then created, of like nature, his mate; and he sent down for you eight head of cattle in pairs: He makes you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness. Such is Allah, your Lord, and Cherisher: to Him belongs (all) dominion. There is no god but He: then how are ye turned away (from your true Centre)?

This verse explains the core concept of Tauheed. It is Allah who holds the power to create human beings from one single soul and cell. It serves as a reminder that there is no other deity except Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى).

Similarly, posing the importance of the Quran, Allah discloses that by remembering Him, hearts become peaceful. True believers are among those people who read the holy Book of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and become fearful of going astray. Allah says in Surah Az-Zumar:

"God has sent down the very best discourse, the Book conformable in its juxtapositions, which makes all of those who fear their Lord shudder. So, their hearts and bodies become receptive to the remembrance of God. This is the guidance of God with which He guides whosoever He will, but whosoever God allows to go astray has none to show him the way." (Az-Zumar: 23)

Moving further in the surah, The Almighty makes it clear to the people by explaining the concept of death. He says, 'God gathers up the souls of those who die, and of those who do not die, in their sleep; then He keeps back those ordained for death and sends the others back for an appointed term. Surely there are signs in this for those who reflect."

The day of Judgment is an inevitable truth that will come no matter what. It is the day when every creature, be it jinn or human, will be given results of what they have been up to in the world. In Surah Az-Zumar, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) shed light upon the day of Resurrection. It says:

"They do not esteem God as is rightly due to Him. The whole earth would be a fistful of His on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens would be rolled up in His right hand. Too immaculate is He and too high for what they associate with Him!" (39:67)

Virtues and Benefits of Surah Az-Zumar (ٱلزُّمَر)

Surah Az-Zumar (الزُّمَر) glorifies Allah. Narrated by Hazrat Aishah:

"The Prophet (ﷺ) would not sleep until he recited Surat Bani Isra'il and Az-Zumar." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi:2920)

This hadith shows that reciting Surah Az-Zumar has a lot of significance. The themes of Tawheed, sincerity in worship, belief in Allah's mercy, preparation for the day of Judgment, and faith in Allah's justice are guiding principles for Muslims in this world. Reciting Surah Az-Zumar reminds Muslims about the glory of Allah, and by reciting the glory of Allah, one can gain His favor.

Surah Az-Zumar brings hope to the believers. It reassures those who transgress that the doors of Allah's mercy are open for all. It is never too late to accept your mistake, seek Tawbah from Allah, and come to the right path. Allah is all forgiving and most merciful. Verse 53 of the surah says:

"Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'"

This surah not only assures Muslims of Allah's mercy but also teaches us the importance of mercy and forgiveness. It tells us that if Allah, the creator of the world, can forgive the most grievous sins of His creation, we should too. It reminds us to be merciful and forgiving in our lives rather than strict and uncompromising. Muslims who forgive those who have wronged them in the name of Allah are following the path of Allah, and Allah will keep them in His favor.

The person who recites Surah Az-Zumar is reminded of the hereafter. This surah points out the difference between believers and disbelievers and further explains the reward of the righteous path and the punishment of the sins. Thus, by reciting the surah regularly, Muslims are reminded to stay on the right path to avoid hellfire and gain entry to paradise. You can read this surah anytime you want, specifically before sleeping. If you wish to read Surah Az-Zumar with complete translation and Tafseer, you can read it through muslimandquran.com

FAQs:

Az-Zumar translates to “the Groups". In the context of Surah Az-Zumar, it refers to the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers will be sent to Hell in “Groups”, whereas the believers will be sent to Paradise also in the form of “Groups”.

Surah Az-Zumar has 75 verses.

No, there is no specific Hadith about Surah Az-Zumar.

Surah Az-Zumar was revealed during the later phase of the Prophethood of the Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, during his stay in Mecca. It is believed that it was revealed a little before the Muslim migration to Habshah, historically known as the "first migration". By that time, the opposition, persecution, and tyranny of the Quraysh had reached its peak. So, this Surah was sent down to refute their wrong and false beliefs and give them a stern warning about the consequences, which they would have to face on the Day of Judgment. In this context, a comparison is also drawn between the believers and disbelievers, with reference to various aspects of belief, such as Tawheed against Shirk, Gratitude against Arrogance, and Knowledge against ignorance. Similarly, the misconceptions of disbelievers that whatever they do bears the sanction from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, is strongly refuted, narrating that the choice between wrong and right is with the humans. So, whether they adopt the wrong or right path, it will decide their destiny accordingly. Likewise, their misconception is that although they believe in Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, they worship Idols to get their help in getting closeness to Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, which is narrated in this Surah as “Shirk”. More importantly, the disbelievers and believers are encouraged and given hope that repenting and seeking mercy from Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, is the best way to avoid severe consequences on the Day of Judgment.
