Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province is known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage that also attracts many tourists to the city. In recent years, the city has also observed an influx of immigrants from rural and less-developed areas because of the economic opportunity in Hangzhou.

Zhenjiang is a province with a population of approximately 117,000 Muslims with many of them settled in Hangzhou. So, you're likely to come across several Muslims during your stay in the city. In case you're unable to do so, you can meet fellow Muslims in the city during your visit to the mosques when you need to offer your prayers and connect with the local population.

Making a move to a secular country can be challenging for any Muslim, particularly if you do not know how to navigate your way around the city and find nearby mosques and prayer times. Luckily, Muslim and Quran has got your back! In this guide, we've compiled a list of the most popular mosques in the city of Hangzhou, along with their prayer and iqamah times to make your trip and move more convenient.

Prayer Times in Hangzhou

There are several mosques in Hangzhou you can visit to offer your mandatory prayers, including Jummah. Mosques are busy during daily prayer times, especially for Jummah/Friday prayers, and may even get crowded due to the eager congregations of Muslims who rush to offer their prayer. Luckily, the mosques in Hangzhou have carried the spiritual and cultural tradition of Islam in the city for a long time and will hopefully continue to do so for a lifetime.

Phoenix Mosque

The Phoenix Mosque is one of the oldest and most well-known mosques in China. The mosque was reportedly built in the Song or Tang dynasty. It is a testament to the historical and cultural significance of Islam in China. The Phoenix Mosque has reportedly been rebuilt and renovated several times during history. After the Song dynasty, the mosque was under the financial assistance of a Persian settled in Hangzhou by the name Ala Al-Din when it was repaired. The minaret was also removed in 1928. However, it was in 1953 that the mosque underwent extensive rebuilding and repair.

The Phoenix Mosque is also known widely for its unique architecture, which is a blend of traditional Chinese-Islamic architecture and traditional Islamic architecture. The highly spacious and beautiful prayer hall the mosque has today was built under the tenure of Kublai Khan – the emperor of Shizu of Yuan, in 1281. The mosque has one central dome and two other domes on the sides of the central domes. The mosque also has a beautiful interior architecture that is decorated with paintings displaying the wonders of nature, from rivers to flowers.

The Phoenix Mosque is also popular among tourists who want to witness the historic mosque and learn more about Islamic history in China. Additionally, tourists, visitors, and worshippers are recommended to be mindful of what they wear, as entry to the mosque is denied to those wearing shorts and sleeveless clothing. The mosque does not usually host congregational prayers as prayer activities have majorly been moved to the Hangzhou Mosque after it was built. The Phoenix Mosque also has several halal food markets and restaurants nearby. So, if you're looking to buy some halal food ingredients including meat, it is recommended to visit these markets. They are majorly owned and operated by Muslims.

Hangzhou Mosque

Hangzhou Mosque is one of the largest mosques in China. It serves as the foundation for the Hangzhou Islamic Society in the city which works tirelessly to provide Muslims of the city with social and religious Islamic services. The need for another mosque in the city arose due to the increasing number of Muslims in Zhenjiang and, hence, Hangzhou. The approval for the mosque was granted by the Hangzhou Development and Reform Commission in 2011, and the mosque eventually opened its door to the public in 2017.

The mosque is busy throughout the day, especially because of its ease of accessibility since it is located within walking distance of the Hangzhou East Railway Station. Hangzhou Mosque has a total of five floors, with the first floor being designated for wadu, the second floor being a female prayer area only, the third floor serving as a male-only prayer area, and an office building for administration. There is also a small halal food market adjacent to the mosque for the convenience of the believers.

There is an ID/Passport control check at the mosque. This can be troublesome for foreigners, especially during prayer times when there is a rush to get to the mosque in time. Therefore, make sure to have your passport or identity on you to avoid delays.

Muslims settled and established their communities in several port cities across China, such as Hangzhou, particularly due to the Chinese southeast coastal region being a significant exchange region between the Chinese and Arabs via the Silk Road.

The population of Muslims increased in Hangzhou during the Song Dynasty when several Muslims came to the city due to the trade relations between the Arab and Song governments. Many Muslims chose Hangzhou as an option due to it being the capital of the dynasty and, hence, being more convenient for business.

When the Song dynasty fell, the Mongol rules of the Yuan dynasty came into power and encouraged business activities with Muslim traders. It was during this period that the Muslim population increased in Hangzhou, leading to the establishment of Muslim burial grounds and mosques in Hangzhou.

Several Islamic immigrants from Korea, India, and Annam, along with China, also immigrated to Hangzhou, leading to the population growing and flourishing. Even today, the Muslim community in the city is united and practices its faith freely.
