1. Badshahi Mosque 

 

Located in Lahore, the Badshahi Mosque is an iconic congregational mosque from the Mughal era. The mosque ruled over the throne of being the world's ''largest'' mosque for more than 313 years. The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb commissioned the construction of the mosque in 1671. The mosque also reflects the Mughal architecture, with its exterior decorated with red carved sandstone. The mosque also has a courtyard, which has been used as a stable and its cells as solder quarters in history. The courtyard has the capacity to accommodate up to 100,00 worshippers when used as an Idgah.

It is also decorated with white marble inlay. The mosque has three domes, with the largest one located in the mosque's center, followed by two smaller domes that are flanked. 2. Wazir Khan Mosque

 

A 17th-century mosque, the Wazir Khan Mosque is another iconic Mughal-era mosque located in Lahore. The mosque was built on the orders of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It is one part of a group of buildings commissioned by the King, including the Shahi Hammam (communal baths) located near the mosque complex. The construction of the mosque was completed in 1641. The mosque is on the list for UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

 

Wazir Khan mosque is one of the most stunningly decorated mosques in Lahore. It is decorated in a kasha-kari manner, which is done by decoration through faience tile work, with the interior surfaces decorated with Mughal-era frescoes. The entry to the mosque is through a massive Timurid-style Iwan over a small portal. The iwan is bordered by two projecting balconies. The mosque's central courtyard consists of tall, arched galleries that surround a brick-paved courtyard – this feature is usually seen in Persian-era Iranian mosques. The courtyard has a pool for Wudu.

 

The mosque has a large prayer hall divided into five sections aligned into a long aisle. The interior of the prayer hall is decorated with calligraphy in Arabian and Persian, with walls containing mosaic designs. 3. Grand Jamia Mosque

 

Grand Jamia Mosque is the 3rd largest mosque in Pakistan and the 14th largest mosque in the world. Situated in the popular housing society by the name of Bahria Town, this mosque is a beautiful architectural masterpiece. The mosque is designed by a renowned Pakistani architect – Nayyar Ali Dada, with a capacity to accommodate a total of 70,000 worshippers. The mosque can accommodate 25,000 worshippers inside the premises and a further 45000 in the courtyard and corridor. The building has a total of 4 minarets and a grand dome surrounded by 20 smaller domes.

5. Dai Anga Mosque 

 

Located near the Lahore Railway Station, Dai Anga Mosque is a historic Mughal-era mosque that was built in 1635 in honor of the wet nurse of the Mughal emperor of that time, Shah Jahan. Dai Anga was the name of the Shah Jahan's wet nurse. The mosque has been through several changes in history. During Ranjit Singh's reign, the mosque was used as a gunpowder magazine. However, after the British annexation of Punjab, the mosque was converted into a private residency for high officials. The building is divided into three different sections and has a courtyard. The largest section of the building has a 19-foot dome, followed by the other two sections having 16-foot domes. The central section is decorated with orange, blue, and yellow qashani tilework.
