About Bexley, UK

The borough of Bexley lies on the outskirts of the city of London. Located to the southeast of London, Bexley is part of the county of Kent. While the current boundaries of Bexley were defined back in 1965, as a way to create a suburban settlement for the city of London, the original settlement dates back centuries.

Traces of human settlement dating back to the Paleolithic Period have been discovered in Bexley, and the borough records remnants of Roman settlements as well. It is an ancient settlement that has undergone modernization. The name of the borough is a variation of the Old English word meaning "boxtree wood" or "clearing", since the borough was abundant in boxtree wood. Whatever the case, the name stuck and remains to this day. The River Thames meanders through the borough, which resulted in Bexley being developed as a royal dockyard where naval ships were made.

Aside from the dockyard, the borough's economy relied on industries such as processing vegetable oil and food, and manufacturing paper, plastics, and chemicals. Financial services are also provided in Bexley, and the borough is a fairly popular tourist spot.

The population of Bexley stood at an estimated 246,500 in 2021, which is fairly large for a borough. The diversity at the national level is represented in Bexley as well. People from varied backgrounds come together to create a cohesive community. Muslims are 3.9% of the total population of Bexley. The number may appear small, however, Islam is growing and remains the third largest religion in Bexley after Christianity and no religious affiliation.

Getting to know the prayer times in Bexley is a challenge for Muslims living there. The number of mosques in Bexley is severely limited. However, it is times like these when mobile applications and online resources, like the Muslim and Quran app, come in handy. They provide accurate prayer times in Bexley and many other useful resources that are essential for Muslims to pray and practice their religion in the best way.

Popular Mosques in Bexley, UK

Bexley, unfortunately, has a few mosques. Despite being a large borough, Bexley does not have enough mosques to cater to the Muslim community. More mosques must be built for Muslims who wish to offer their salat in congregation. The mosques that do exist in Bexley are:

Masjid Abu Bakr

Masjid Abu Bakr has a long and eventful history. What began as a group of Muslims offering the Friday prayer in congregation inside the Westgate Secondary School Hall back in 1997 was eventually established as a proper mosque when a residential building was bought in 2001. It wasn't until 2009 that the mosque moved again, for the final time, to its current location, when a church was converted into a mosque and was renamed Masjid Abu Bakr in 2017.

The existing building of the mosque is beautiful. The geometric façade is a stark white with bright green domes, which signify a cool and calm aesthetic. Inside the enormous prayer halls allow for worshippers to gather and offer prayer in a comfortable atmosphere. There are toilets and wudu facilities available as well.

Masjid Omar Faruq Welling

Masjid Omar Faruq was established three years ago because Muslims in the area did not have a mosque where they could pray. The mosque was situated on the first floor of a building that had a Pizza Hut. Separate prayer areas for men and women, as well as bathrooms, were available at the mosque so anyone could come and offer prayer. Unfortunately, the mosque has been closed temporarily for the past few months. It is expected to open soon.
