About Kungsholmen, Stockholm

Part of central Stockholm, Kungsholmen is an island surrounded by Lake Mälaren, Sweden’s third largest lake. Kungsholmen means King’s Islet, though it was originally called Munklägret or the Monk’s encampment since the island was populated by Franciscan friars in the 15th century. The island is a far cry from its religious beginnings, as it is an urban center where history and modernity collide.

Kungsholmen’s transformation began with the Swedish Reformation that resulted in the expulsion of monks from the island. Industrialization efforts resulted in the development of factories and companies on the island, and this, in turn, led to the construction of housing, apartment buildings, and hospitals in the area. Recently, Kungsholmen’s industries have seen a decline as the focus has been on residential developments and providing public facilities for residents. Connected to Stockholm proper through various bridges, and a metro system that dates back to the 1950s, making it the oldest mass transit service among the Scandinavian countries.

There are many landmarks on the island, the main ones include: The Stockholm City Hall, the Stockholm Courthouse, Kristineberg Palace, and the Saint Göran Hospital. Kungsholmen is a modern urban center with a full range of public facilities, with a well-preserved history that is worth a visit.

Stockholm Central Mosque

Faith Moské

A very organized and well-maintained mosque. Faith Moské is easy enough to find using direction available on Google and a sign that clearly indicates that it is a mosque. The issue, however, is getting inside the mosque, as it is locked and requires a code to get inside. This may seem like an unnecessary inconvenience, yet it is the discretion of the management, and they are doing a great job maintaining the mosque. Women have a separate space for offering prayers, and there are toilets and ablution sinks available for worshippers.
