Dua for Travel


While modern travel is not fraught with the dangers of travel in the old times, it is still perilous. More people lose their lives in travel accidents than in wars or terrorist attacks. Whether you're traveling within or outside your country, it's essential to start any journey with the remembrance of Allah Almighty. Remembering Allah and supplicating to Him before we take off on our journeys can protect us from any harm during our travel and can also help us reach our destination safely. So, whether you're traveling for work, enjoyment, or traveling for Umrah or Hajj, remember to recite the following Dua before the start of your travel:

(1)اللَّهُ أكبَرُ، اللَّهُ أكبَرُ، اللَّهُ أكبَرُ، سُـبْحانَ الَّذِي سَخَّـرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْـرِنيِنَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبونَ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّـقْوَى، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى، اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الأَهْلِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُبِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ، وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ، وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمالِ وَالأَهْلِ(2) آيِبُونَ، تَائِبُونَ، عَابِدُونَ، لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ

Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahu 'Akbar, Subhaanal-lathee sakhkhara lanaa haathaa wa maa kunnaa lahu muqrineen. Wa 'innaa 'ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon. Allaahumma 'innaa nas'aluka fee safarinaa haathal-birrawattaqwaa, waminal-'amalimaa tardhaa, Allaahumma hawwin 'alaynaa safaranaa haathaa watwi 'annaa bu'dahu, Allaahumma 'Antas-saahibu fis-safari, walkhaleefatu fil-'ahli, Allaahumma 'innee 'a'oothu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari, wa ka'aabanl-mandhari, wa soo'il-munqalabi fil-maaliwal'ahli.(1)'Aa'iboona, taa'iboona, 'aabidoona, Lirabbinaa haamidoon.(2)

Передают, что когда посланник Аллаха (с.а.в.с.) садился верхом на своего верблюда, [намереваясь отправиться] в путь, он трижды произносил слова «Аллах велик», а потом говорил: «Пречист Тот, Кто подчинил нам это, ведь нам такое не под силу! Поистине, мы вернёмся к Господу нашему. О Аллах! Поистине, мы просим Тебя [помочь нам придерживаться] благочестия и богобоязненности в этом нашем путешествии и совершать такие дела, которыми Ты останешься доволен. О Аллах! Облегчи нам это наше путешествие и сократи для нас его дальность. О Аллах! Ты будешь спутником в этом путешествии и станешь преемником в семье. О Аллах! Поистине, я прибегаю к Твоей защите от трудностей пути, от уныния, которое [может навеять] увиденное, и от всего дурного, [что может случиться] с имуществом и семьёй»(1). Возвращаясь, он [повторял те же слова], добавляя [к сказанному]: «Мы возвращаемся, каемся, Господу нашему поклоняемся и воздаём [Ему] хвалу»(2)

Etiquettes for Reciting Dua for Travel


The dua should be recited for a safe, convenient, and easy journey before you start to travel. The supplication will protect you from any harm and inconvenience during your journey. Make sure to recite it right before starting off the traveling journey, preferably after praying two raka'at nawafil before you set off, as it is Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) to do so.


Upon returning from your journey, recite the same dua, but make sure to add:


آيِبُونَ، تَائِبُونَ، عَابِدُونَ، لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ / Aa'iboona, taa'iboona, 'aabidoona, Lirabbinaa haamidoon ("We return repentant to our Lord, worshiping our Lord, and praising our Lord"). [Hisnul 207] [Muslim 2/978.]

Another dua to recite when traveling is as follows: “Subhanal-ladzi sakh-khara lana hadza wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamun-qalibun.’’ Translation: In the name of Allah, and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service, and we would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.
