Al-Muqit

The Maintainer, The Guardian, The Feeder, The One who has the Power.

Allah is Al-Muqeet or the ultimate sustainer. He gives strength and nourishment to all of creation and maintains all that exists. He oversees, guards, and preserves all. To Allah we owe the satisfaction of all needs, but he himself is alone and independent of needs.

Al-Muqit (The Nourisher) Definition & Meaning

It is a very special name of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) that describes His ultimate attribute of being a sustainer. Al-Muqit means he provides everything: food, shelter, strength, or victories. It means He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) has not just created us but looks after us and provides us with all our necessities. Be it us, humans, or any other living being like an ant, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) looks after all our needs and ensures we all have what it takes us to strive and thrive in this world.

Allah is Al-Muqit, who doesn't leave us alone in our hard times and cares for us. He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) guides us and provides us with all the necessities to live, while He does not require anything for Himself. It's a give-and-take relationship with Allah, where we are the takers, while Al-Muqit is only the giver.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in Surah An-Nisa:

مَّن يَشۡفَعۡ شَفَٰعَةً حَسَنَةٗ يَكُن لَّهُۥ نَصِيبٞ مِّنۡهَاۖ وَمَن يَشۡفَعۡ شَفَٰعَةٗ سَيِّئَةٗ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كِفۡلٞ مِّنۡهَاۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ مُّقِيتٗا

Translation: Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a reward therefrom, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will have a burden therefrom. And ever is Allah, over all things, a keeper.” (Quran 4:85)

In Surah Hud, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) describes Himself as Al-Muqeet – the provider for all His creations on this planet. Allah says:

Translation: “And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage. All is in a clear register.” (Quran 11:6)

Significance of Al-Muqit

When we call Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) Al-Muqit, we accept that He doesn’t need anything Himself and is the only One who provides us with everything. He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is our sole sustainer and is always there to help us without needing anything in return.

Al-Muqit – Importance of the Name

The name of Allah, Al-Muqit, highlights the attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) as the ultimate source of everything. Be it the air we breathe in, the food we eat, our health, our shelter, or any other requirements; it is only Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) who satisfies us with these needs being our only Provider. Having an understanding that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is our sustainer, we get encouragement to show our gratitude towards Allah and rely only upon Him for sustenance.

According to Ibn Jareer, Allah's name, Al-Muqeet, means that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is Al-Hafiz (The Guardian), Al-Shaheed (the Witness), and Al-Hasab (The Sufficient). In short, Allah is the One in control of everything in this world and the world beyond it.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in Surah Fussilat:

وَجَعَلَ فيها رَواسِيَ مِن فَوقِها وَبارَكَ فيها وَقَدَّرَ فيها أَقواتَها في أَربَعَةِ أَيّامٍ سَواءً لِلسّائِلينَ

Translation: “He placed therein (i.e., the earth) firm mountains from above it, and He blessed it, and measured therein its sustenance (for its dwellers) in our Days equal (i.e., all these four days were equal in the length of time), for all those who ask (about His creations).” (Quran 41:10)

Al–Muqit–Tasbih

Tasbeeh is a repetition of specific terms that can be names of Allah or anything specific that we learn through Sunnah. Doing the dhikr of Al-Muqit expresses our desire to praise Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) for being our sustainer and taking care of us at every step of life. By praising Allah with His attribute of being the Provider and Sustainer, we not only glorify Him but also accept that Allah is free from any imperfection, and nothing is impossible of Him. He is the only One who provides, protects, helps, listens, and fulfills our needs and desires.

Preferable Time to Read Al-Muqit

There is no suggested time to recite Al-Muqit. As its meaning tells us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is the sustainer and provider, we can call upon Allah with His name Al-Muqit when in trouble, when we are seeking rizq, when we need protection, or during any moment that requires us to be strong and show our trust in Allah.

Incorporating Al-Muqit into Daily Life

We all need food, shelter, and all the necessities of life daily. Every Muslim trust Allah for sustenance, providing everything they need, and calling upon Him as Ya-Muqitt expresses gratitude to Allah and trusts Him for providing sustenance and provision.

We can include Ya-Muqit in our daily prayers, our prayers after offering salah, the first thing after waking up, and the last thing before going to sleep. This will create our habit of calling upon the One who provides us food and strength with His specific name that defines this attribute. Calling Allah Ya-Muqit is praising Allah for providing everything and never leaving us alone in need.

Naming Children After Al-Muqit

Yes, we can name our children after Muqit. It can be used for the boys' names and give the child a positive energy. We can always pray that the qualities be reflected in the child, leading Him to a deeply connected life with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Adding Abdul can be a great way to add a deeper connection with Allah as Abdul means servant of, and if you name your child Abdul Muqit, the meaning becomes Servant of the Provider.

In the case of Al-Muqit, adding Abdul is not necessary as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) has made people sustainers too, but the main and only sustainer who provides all the humans and the creations is Allah alone. Adding Abdul with names that only define the attributes of Allah, like Ar-Rahman, adding Abdul is a must.
