Muslim Population in Comoros

As of 2021, the United States government estimated the total population of Comoros to be 864,000, of which 98 percent is Sunni Muslim.  Shia Muslims, Ahmadi Muslims, Roman Catholics, and Protestants made up less than 2 percent of the population.  Shia and Ahmadi Muslims live mainly on the island of Anjouan. Non-Muslims are mostly foreigners residing in the country’s capital, Moroni, and the capital of Anjouan, Mutsamudu. Most of the Comorian population is of Arab-Swahili descent, with a few Indian individuals mainly of Gujarati descent. Hundreds of mosques and madrassahs have been constructed throughout the islands. Tombs of historic Islamic personalities are also present. 
 

Islamic Education in Comoros

Quran schools have been established across Comoros, where children aged five and above enroll for about two to three years. Besides reciting the Holy Quran, the children are taught the basics of Islam along with some standard Arabic. Since poverty is rampant in the region, most families cannot afford tuition. Therefore, they opt for Islamic schools so their children can acquire an Islamic education free of cost. There is only one university in the capital city of Moroni that offers higher learning, and it is called the University of Comoros. Various courses are offered, including biology, finance, medicine, politics, history, and law.
