The majority of the population in Cyprus is Christian, but Islam is the second most popular religion. Islam came in contact with this ancient country in 649 AD when the Umayyad Caliphate began challenging the ruling Byzantine Empire. In 688, Emperor Justinian II and Caliph Abd al-Malik signed a treaty that mandated that Cyprites pay equal tax to the caliphate and the empire to avoid skirmishes between the imperial and Muslim troops. With this treaty, Muslim influence increased in the southern region of Cyprus while the empire maintained a stronghold in the North.
The second wave of Muslim influence came with the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottoman Empire in 1570 AD. Led by Lala Mustafa Pasha, Ottomans captured Nicosia after brief resistance from the locals. The Ottomans reigned in Cyprus from 1570 to 1878, when they ceded Cyprus to Britain after the Russo-Turkish Wars. By this time, a Turkish Cypriot community had been established in Cyprus, comprised mostly of Muslims from Turkey and converts. At the time, almost 18% of the population was Turkish Cypriot, and 82% was Greek Cypriot.
The influence of Islam in Cyprus can be seen in the Arabahmet Mosque in Nicosia, the Umm Haram Mosque in Larnaca, the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, the Selimiye Mosque, and the Haydarpasha Mosque. The later 3 mosques are all built on former catholic cathedrals, remnants of the Crusader era.
Vakf is the Islamic institute that is working in Cyprus for Islamic education and the welfare of the Muslim community in Cyprus. Largely running as a charitable organization, vakf also remains the main authority responsible for taking initiatives to bring the Muslim community of Cyprus together.
