Islamic Culture and Heritage in Georgia

Islam first came to Georgia in the 645 AD during the reign of Uthman رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, the third Caliph of Islam. During his tenure, Tbilisi (now the capital city of Georgia) developed into a trade center between the Islamic world and northern Europe. However, Islam’s presence continued in the region throughout the 14th and 15th centuries with Timur’s invasion of the country.

The Iranians (Safavids, Afsharids, Qajars) along with the Ottomans also maintained an influence in the region during the 16th century up till the 19th century. In 1703, Vakhtang VI – a Georgian monarch became the rule of the kingdom of Kartli and later embraced Islam. In 2011, the Georgian Parliament passed a law that allowed religious minority groups in the country, including Muslims that have historic ties to Georgia to register with the government. The constitution of Georgia provides full religious freedom to the citizens of the country and the government has also typically respected this right in practice.
