The last update about the Muslim population in Guadeloupe was in 2009 when the region was estimated to have a population of 2000 Muslims, approximately 0.4 of the population. However, its safe to assume due to an increase in globalization and immigration, the population has significantly increased since. Most of the Muslim population in the region is estimated to be made up of African Muslim immigrants who move to the region in search of a better life.
In 2015, the Guadeloupe Muslim Association was established to provide Muslims in the region with a platform to connect and socialize. Plans for a mosque adjacent to the Guadeloupe Muslim Association have also been in place for decades, but the mosque has not yet materialized. Luckily, Muslims in the region have managed to come together and establish a mosque to practice their religion in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe. Mosquée Al Madina, Guadeloupe is the only mosque available in the region.
Mosquée Al Madina – Address: Grand camp, l'offre 29 le patio les abymes 97142, Guadeloupe.
Muslims make up only 0.4% of the overall population. Therefore, halal food and dining opportunities may not be easily available in the region. It is possible that you may find halal food in areas where African Muslims reside. However, be mindful of the food you consume and always ensure to check with the food vendors and chef what you’re consuming. If halal food is not easily available, you will have several vegetarian food options to try on the island.
Whether you’ve moved to the island as a traveler on a short visit or are moving to the region for the long haul, it can get difficult to adjust to a non-Muslim land if you do not have fellow Muslims to connect with. Since Guadeloupe is a majority Christian-country, it may be challenging to come across many Muslims in the local areas. Therefore, we recommend visiting the mosque regularly for your five daily prayers, as this offers an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow Muslims, get to know more about the region, and feel at home! We wish you the best of luck for your trip to the island of Guadeloupe!
