Islam spread in Guinea in the 17th century through Arabs. Guinea was part of the Mali empire in the time of Sundiata Keita (1217 - 1255), who was the empire's founder. Fouta Djallon, a highland region in Guinea, became a stronghold of Islam in the late 7th century, establishing the Imamate of Futa Jallon in 1725.

During the colonial period, Islam spread across the region, and in the 20th century, the Ahmadiyya movement was introduced. When Guinea gained independence in 1958, President Ahmed Sekou Toure initially sought to reduce Islam's influence but was unsuccessful.

Islam spread across Guinea, with 90% of the population practicing Islam today. Famous Saudi King Fahad funded the Grand Mosque of Conakry in 1982, the largest mosque in West Africa.
