Islamic Culture and Heritage in Libya

Islam is the dominant and official religion in Libya. Islam reached Libya during the 7th century through traders, mostly from Arabs and preachers of the religion. Muammar al-Gaddafi, who ruled Libya from 1969 till 2011, was a devoted Muslim and wanted to revolutionize the country and bring Islam into the routine life of Libyans. He belonged to a poor Bedouin Arab family, became an Arab nationalist while at school, and later got enrolled in a military academy. In 1977, he transformed Libya into a socialist state and served a role in government. At the same time, he served as head of the military as well as the Revolutionary committee.

Gaddafi worked hard to bring back the essence of Islam after he thought it had been disturbed in the colonial period by Europeans. He made Islam a legal part of Libya and imposed Sharia Law. He banned all illegal practices that did not comply with Islamic teachings and laws, forbade the immodest dressing, and closed nightclubs and bars. He believed the Quran is a valuable guide even in political matters and therefore published The Green Book, which served as a political guide in the light of the Quran.

In 1973, Gaddafi revised the entire Libyan judicial system to be made according to the Shariah law, and in 1977, issued a statement through the General People's Congress to form all the legal codes according to the teachings of the Quran. He wanted to make Libya the leader of the Islamic nation. He also collected Jihad funds from the taxes and helped the Palestinians against their struggle with Israel.

Ramadan: Upon sighting the moon of Ramadan, the Libyan Muslims fast for the whole month, seeking forgiveness and blessings of Allah.

Eid-Ul-Fitr: As soon as the Shawaal moon is sighted, it brings an end to the fasts of Ramadan, and Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated the next morning. It begins with an Eid prayer in the congregation and is celebrated with friends and relatives enjoying the meals and thanking Allah for the blessing He has bestowed.

Eid-ul-Adha: Celebrated across the Muslim world in the last month of the Islamic calendar. Eid-ul-Adha celebrations start with the Eid prayer and later sacrificing an animal in the name of Allah, remembering Prophet Ibrahim's (A.S) story, when He was ordered by Allah to sacrifice His son. Ibrahim (A.S) obeyed Allah's command and took his son for the sacrifice, but Allah showed His mercy and love for Ibrahim (A.S) and replaced His son with an animal. So, Muslims sacrifice animals on this Eid and enjoy the feast with their family and friends.
