North Macedonia is situated in the Balkan region, which remained under the Ottoman Empire for more than five centuries, from 1371 to 1912. As such, Islamic and Turkish Culture remained a dominant force in this part of the world for centuries. Accordingly, the Islamic Cultural heritage, with the dominance of Turkish traits, can be seen everywhere in North Macedonia, despite the communist regime's oppression against the Muslims during the era of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The Islamic Cultural heritage in North Macedonia is predominantly a Turkish Islamic heritage. At present, there are more than 600 Mosques in this country. Famous historical mosques in Macedonia include the Yani Mosque in Bitola, Ali Pasha's Mosque in Ohrid, Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Skopje, Kodza Mehmet Beg Mosque in Kumanovo municipality, and many more. Many of these historical mosques also serve as Islamic Cultural and Community centers, such as Murat Pasha Mosque, which was rebuilt in 1802 and is currently an Islamic Art Gallery.
Sarena Dzamija, the Colorful Mosque, is yet another historical mosque, situated in Tetovo. It was originally built in 1438 and was rebuilt in 1833. The Mihrab and walls of this Mosque are tastefully decorated and painted in different color patterns, due to which it is known as the Colorful Mosque.
Islamic festivals such as Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha are celebrated in North Macedonia with religious and local cultural norms. The upcoming event of Eid Al-Adha is expected (based on the sighting of the moon) to occur on 15th or 16th June 2024. Both these Eids are observed throughout the Muslims in North Macedonia. It is also a National Holiday on both of these occasions.
Similarly, the month of Ramadan is also observed with religious passion in this country amongst Muslims. Ramadan is also observed officially at the Government level, in addition to the local Muslim population. The highlight of the event is the special meals prepared for Sahoor and Iftar. Foods such as Baklawa and Pacha are the typical Turkish cuisines specially prepared for Ramadan.
Muslims of Macedonia specifically visit the Mosques in major cities to recite the Quran during Ramadan. However, being a Muslim minority country, the daily routine of the community goes as usual during the month of Ramadan.
