Rwanda Cities with Muslim Population 

Rwanda is located in Central Africa and has a population of around 14 million. It is a Christian-dominant country, and Muslims live as a minority. Only 2% to 5% of the total population represents Islam, while 65% are Christians. Even though Muslims are in the minority, there are around 500 mosques across the country. 

Muslims are scattered across Rwanda but are found mainly in these few cities:

Kigali: It is the largest city and the capital of Rwanda. Kigali has a diverse culture, and a large number of Muslim population live here. Many mosques are in different parts of the city to cater to the Muslim communities living there.

Butare: It is the second largest city in Rwanda. Butare, also known as Huye, has a total population of around 72 thousand people, of which many Muslims reside in the city. Butare Mosque is the central mosque of the city and caters to a large number of Muslims. 

Muhanga: Formerly known as Gitarama, is the fourth largest city in Rwanda and is located in the country's centre. It comprises many Muslims living in communities across the city. Al-Masjid is a famous mosque in the city. 

Gisenyi: It is famous for beaches and water sports. Many Muslims live in the city and have a few mosques for worship. Rubavu Mosque, being a famous name, offers a place for worship, religious events, and festival celebrations like the Eid Prayer. 

Islamic Culture and Heritage in Rwanda

Islam was introduced in Rwanda by the Arab traders in the 20th century. Many people converted to Islam amid the Rwanda genocide, as many individuals were dissatisfied with some church officials who participated in the event.

Many efforts were made to spread Islam in Rwanda, but it was always looked upon as a foreign religion. Catholic Christian officials went a great mile to protect their religious people from converting to other rival religions like Protestants and Islam. 

The first mosque in Rwanda was built in 1913 and was called Al-Fatah Mosque.

Rwanda has limited options for Halal dining, but it's growing. As a culturally diverse city, Kigali has few Halal dining options in the Muslim-majority areas. You can find Middle Eastern, Indian, and Local Rwanda Cuisines available in Halal options. 

Khana Khazana, a famous Indian restaurant chain, serves halal authentic Indian food in Kigali. Another famous name in Kigali for Turkish and Mediterranean food is Umut Cafe and Restaurant. It's best to always check for the Halal certificate issued by the Islamic authorities in Rwanda to ensure you are being served with Halal food.
