Islam has been present in Senegal since the 11th century introduced by the Arab traders in Africa. Its spread started when the King of Takrur, War Jabi converted to Islam in 1040. But they lost to Serer, who refused to accept Islam and protected their traditional religion. In the 18th century, the French found a way and colonized the region. The Muslims joined hands against the colonization. Senegal and the Mali Federation gained independence from the French colonization on 20th June 1960. After independence, Islam was declared as Senegal's official religion.
