South African Cities with Muslim Population

South Africa is the southernmost country of the African continent. It has a population of 62 million, with 80% of the population following Christianity. Islam is practiced by only 1.6% of the total population. Muslims live across South Africa and have established their mosques country-wide, even in small towns. Some cities with high populations of Muslims are Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Pietermaritzburg, Bloemfontein, East London, and Kimberley.

Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa and is the oldest city in the country. A good number of Muslims live in it, and there are several mosques. Durban is known for its large Indian community and has many mosques for the worship of Muslims. All the other cities mentioned have mosques built to worship Muslim communities.

Islamic Culture and Heritage in South Africa

Islam is a minority religion practiced by about 1.6% of the population. Islam became part of South Africa in three phases. The first phase was when the earliest Muslims were part of the involuntary migration of slaves, artisans, and political prisoners from the Dutch East Indies to the Cape Colony between 1652 and 1800.

The second phase was when enslaved laborers from British India working in Natal’s sugar cane fields were brought in 1860 - 1911; among them, around 7 to 10% were Muslims. The third phase involved around 75 thousand to 100 thousand African Muslims migrating to South Africa. There were also Muslims from South Asia, including Pakistan and India, who arrived as economic migrants.

In South Africa, there are around 792 mosques where Muslims worship their religion. Nizamiye Mosque in Johannesburg, inspired by Ottoman architecture, is a famous Islamic site. It also has a school, a clinic, and a Turkish cultural center.

Islamic Festivals and Events in South Africa

Muslims of South Africa celebrate all the events just like the rest of the Muslim world. They observe fasts in the month of Ramadan. Upon sighting Shawaal’s moon, South African Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their family and friends. In the last month of Dhul Al-Hijjah, Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, where they sacrifice animals, distribute them, and celebrate the feast with their family and friends.

  • Adega - Gateway (Portuegese, Sea food)

  • Lal Qila Theme Restaurant (Pakistani, Indian, Buffet, Fusion)
