These were mostly Hui Muslims and were the first ones to introduce Islamic culture and practices in Taiwan. They built the first-ever mosque and established a community.
Today, there are a total of ten mosques across Taiwan, built in the major cities. These mosques serve as worship places, religious gathering places, and also as Islamic educational institutions. The Taipei Grand Mosque is the largest and most notable mosque in Taiwan, located in its capital city of Taipei. It was built in the year 1960 and is also recognized as a national historic site. Another Muslim landmark is Kaohsiung Mosque, located in Kaohsiung City and was built in the year 1992. There are mostly Hui Muslims or Muslims from Indonesia, so the Islamic culture in Taiwan is a blend of both Hui and Indonesian culture.
