Historically, Vanuatu remained a colony of Spain for a short time. Later on, it remained under the Colonization by France but ultimately, it went under the control of the United Kingdom. The rest of the population follow different religions, including Islam. At present, it is estimated that some 1000 Muslims live in different cities of Vanuatu. The first Muslim in Vanuatu is believed to be Hussain Nabanga, who converted to Islam in 1978. Vanuatu Muslim Center represents the Muslim Community of this Island Country.

The first Mosque was established in 1992 in a village, namely Mele, situated on the outskirts of the Capital City, Port Vila. Later on, another Mosque was established in Middle Bush on Tanna Island. Another prayer place is also available in Dilson Bay, on Erromango Island.

Islam was introduced just less than half a century ago, in 1978, when the first person converted to Islam, namely, Hussein Nabanga.  Hence, the historical cultural heritage of Islam cannot be identified anywhere in Vanuatu. However, the Vanuatu Muslim Center is officially registered as a Muslim society. Slowly and gradually, the Muslim community is flourishing in Vanuatu. Currently, Muslims are living in different parts of Vanuatu and have established a couple of Mosques as well. The constitution of Vanuatu, being secular, allows for establishing the places of prayer for all religions, including Islam.

Islamic Festivals and Events in Vanuatu

With hardly 1000 Muslims scattered in different areas of the Island Country of Vanuatu, there is no formal celebration of Islamic festivals and events. Moreover, the Muslims of Vanuatu are highly influenced by the local customs and norms, which are also reflected in their religious rituals as well, such as a customary dance after the performance of religious activities and rituals. Moreover, there are no official holidays for any of the Islamic events. The Muslims of Vanuatu, however, celebrated events such as the two Eids and fasting in Ramadan individually.
