The Significance of Rabi Al Thani

Rabi al-Thani is a month to make duas, zikr, sadqa and recite Istaghfar. Offering Salah and reciting Quran can be a great means to please Allah and seek His blessings in this month. In this blessed month, four rak’ah prayers were made compulsory to offer at home, while two remained while traveling. In a Sahih Hadith, Hazrat Aisha narrates:

“Allah enjoined the prayer when He enjoined it; it was two rak’at only (in every prayer), both when in residence or on journey. Then the prayers offered on journey remained the same, but (the rak’at of) the prayers for non-travelers were increased.” (Sahih Bukhari 350, Book 8, Hadith 2)

Key Dates in Rabi Al-Thani

During the Prophet's (S.A.W) life, the Battle of Burhan took place in the Hijaz region between Makkah and Medina. This battle is also known as the Battle of Fur’ and Battle of Bani Sulaym and took place at the start of Rabi ul-Thani, with an army of 300 soldiers led by Ibn Umm Makhtum. No clash happened between the two parties, and Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) returned safely to Medina.

In another event on the 9th of Hijiri, the Prophet (S.A.W) sent Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (R.A) with an army of 150 men to destroy the idols. Ali (R.A.) went with his companions and returned victorious.

Prophet (S.A.W) sent a group of 40 men led by Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (R.A) to the tribe of Banu Tha’labah when 9 of the companions on a mission with Muhammad ibn Maslamah were killed. When this group attacked the people of the Banu Tha’labah tribe, they ran and hid in the mountains and only one man was captured. This person converted to Islam and the army returned home safely.
