About Mosques
A mosque is a place of worship for Muslims. Though prayers can be offered at any neat and clean place in your home or anywhere else, the best place to do so is a Mosque, where the five regular prayers are offered collectively behind the Imam. Additionally, Friday Prayer is also performed in congregations at Mosques. There are hundreds and thousands of Mosques all around the world, even in Muslim minority areas, but the most famous among them are Masjid Al-Haram and Masjid-e-Nabvi, situated in Mecca and Medina, respectively.
In the earlier days of Islam, Muslims offered prayers, facing towards Masjid Al-Aqsa, situated in Palestine. After some time, the direction of Qibla was changed towards Masjid Al-Haram by the Will and Command of Allah. The place where this historic event took place is known as Masjid-e-Qiblatain (the Mosque of two Qiblas). The 144th verse of Surah Al-Baqarah narrates this historic event.
Translation - We have seen you turn your face to the heavens. We shall turn you to a Qiblah that will please you. So turn towards the Holy Mosque, and turn towards it wherever you be. And those who are recipients of the Book surely know that this is the truth from their Lord; and God is not negligent of all that you do.
Since then, all Mosques are built facing towards Masjid Al-Haram.
The construction of Mosques is also a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Prophet built the first mosque in Medina after he migrated from Mecca, which is known as Masjid-e-Nabvi.
Importance of Mosques
A Mosque is not only a place of worship for Muslims but also serves as a community center for them. A mosque is also a center of religious education. Traditionally, Mosques are associated with Islamic Educational Centers, commonly known as "Madrassa," where children learn the Quran and Hadith. In the earlier days of Islam, important religious and community matters were discussed and decided in the Mosques. Although this tradition no longer exists, Mosques' role in promoting religious education is still in practice.
In some parts of the world, especially in non-Muslim countries, Mosques are used as a community center as well, where they arrange marriage ceremonies.
