The literal meaning of Al-Fattah is the opener, the judge, and the supreme solver.

The root word of Al-Fattah is fa-ta-ha (ف ت ح).  It has four traditional Arabic connotations:

  • The second meaning states to make someone victorious.
  • The third meaning is to judge and decide.

قُلْ يَجْمَعُ بَيْنَنَا رَبُّنَا ثُمَّ يَفْتَحُ بَيْنَنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَهُوَ ٱلْفَتَّاحُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

Say, “Our Lord will gather us together, then He will judge between us with the truth. For He is the All-Knowing Judge” (Quran- 34:26)

Allah-Al-Fatah opened the doors of blessings and goodness for His slaves. Another meaning of Al-Fattah is the judge. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) judges the beliefs and intentions of the heart and decides according to His wisdom and will. Significance of the Name Al-Fattah

The word Al-Fattah empowers a believer. مَّا يَفْتَحِ ٱللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ مِن رَّحْمَةٍۢ فَلَا مُمْسِكَ لَهَا ۖ وَمَا يُمْسِكْ فَلَا مُرْسِلَ لَهُۥ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٢

Whatever mercy Allah opens up for people, none can withhold it. And whatever He withholds, none but Him can release it. For He is the Almighty, All-Wise. (Quran 35:2)

It is a challenge for you to prove your love and loyalty to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). In these challenging times, soothe your heart by incorporating the name Al-Fattah into your daily life. Remind yourself that Allah is Al-Fattah, the opener, the problem solver, the judge; soon, He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) will make a way out for me, He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) has the keys for all my looked doors, He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) will open my doors. Keep praying with belief (Tawakul) and see how miraculously Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) will open your closed doors. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in the Quran: (3:159)

فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ

Naming children after the name A-Fattah is highly recommended by scholars. The name should be given as Abdul-Fattah, the slave of the opener. Imam Ghazali's emphasis is that one should characterize oneself as Abdul-Fattah. He said," Man should have the desire to reach the point to unlock divine mysteries by his speech and facilitate the people in worldly and religious affairs by his knowledge." Sharing what you know, guiding people, and sharing your experiences with them for their good are some of the characteristics of Abdul-Fattah.

There are many verses in the Quran mentioning that Allah is Al-Fatah, the opener. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in the Quran:

فَلَمَّا نَسُوا۟ مَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَبْوَٰبَ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَرِحُوا۟ بِمَآ أُوتُوٓا۟ أَخَذْنَـٰهُم بَغْتَةًۭ فَإِذَا هُم مُّبْلِسُونَ ٤٤

When they became oblivious to warnings, we showered them with everything they desired. But just as they became prideful of what they were given, we seized them by surprise. Then, they instantly fell into despair! (Quran-6;44)

إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًۭا مُّبِينًۭا

Indeed, We have granted you a clear triumph, O Prophet (). (Quran-48:1)
