In the 99 names of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), Al-Haqq is the 52nd name, and its meaning is the ‘the absolute truth.’ The root of this name implies that the word Haqq has four different connotations in the meaning derived from it as it is mentioned in the Quran in 7 different forms.
The first meaning of Haqq is the truth. Something real and free from anything false. The second meaning derived from the same root is something that is accurate and fits the understanding of justice and wisdom. the third meaning derived from the root of Haqq is that it is something that exists as a fact. Something that will take place inevitably. Lastly, the meaning of Haqq can also be understood as something befitting.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) in the Holy Quran mentions himself to be Al-Haqq in multiple surahs, which makes it obvious for one to understand the different connotations of the word Al-Haqq. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is the One and Only who is the Ultimate Truth and it is an important pillar of faith that makes one a Muslim when they believe in the Absoluteness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). This can be explained through the following verse of the Holy Quran “And say: ‘The Truth is from your Lord.’ Then whosoever wills, let him believe, and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve (Quran 18:29).
Allah’s name, Al-Haqq, is a reminder that it is only Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) to who is the truth and the truth belong. in this worth and hereafter. The word of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is the truth and it is only through Him that we can reach the truth in this life. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) mentions His characteristic as that of the ultimate truth in the following verse: “And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, “Indeed, Allah had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allah] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment” (Quran 14:22)
This verse highlights the significance of us knowing Allah's promises and believing in Him and His word rather than relying on the misleading principles around us. The world is a testing place, and standing up for the truth and being truthful can be a difficult task, but Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) promises us ease and Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) being Al-Haqq, everything He says is the truth to live our lives by.
Allah’s name, Al-Haqq, reminds one of the facts that our reliance is only supposed to be on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) as His promises to us, his judgment, and His knowledge that extends beyond our understanding is the truth and has no hint of fallibility in any sense. The Quran affirms in Surah Al-Ana’am that “they are returned to Allah—their True Master. Judgment is His alone. And He is the Swiftest Reckoner" (Quran 6:62).
Names with similar meanings as Al-Haqq are Al-Adl, which means the utterly just Al-Muqsit- the Just One, Al-Mubdi meaning the originator; and Ar-Rasheed, which means the infallible teacher. All of these names each speak about different attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), but they can be understood in the context that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is the one that is Truth and that all Truth comes from. He is the one who is the most Just and at the right always.
Repeatedly in the Holy Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) has mentioned that there are signs for those who believe. Everything around us, the truths of what is in front of us and what remains unknown, are All from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and His existence is the Ultimate and supreme truth for all the believers. The Quran and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) testify that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is Al-Haqq.
Verses in the Quran such as: “This is so because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call on besides Him is falsehood” (Quran 31:30) and “His promise is the very truth; He has said in this regard: Surely the promise of Allah is true” (Qur’an, 31:33) reminds us that one must acknowledge that the ultimate reality is that what Allah has decided and will unfold to us in their due time. This is further affirmed in the Quran in the verse: “And Allah will show the truth to be true by His words” (Quran 10:82)
Narrated by Ibn Abbas and reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 1120, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) invoked Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) through the name Al-Haqq when he would wake up in the night to offer tahajjud prayer and made the following supplication where he testified that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is truest and most just in the following words " And all the praises are for You; You are the Truth and Your Promise is the truth, And to meet You is true, Your Word is the truth And Paradise is true And Hell is true And all the Prophets (Peace be upon them) are true; And Muhammad is true, And the Day of Resurrection is true. O Allah! I surrender (my will) to You; I believe in You and depend on You. And repent to You, And with Your help, I argue (with my opponents, the non-believers) And I take You as a judge (to judge between us). Please forgive me my previous And future sins; And whatever I concealed or revealed And You are the One who make (some people) forward And (some) backward. There is none to be worshipped but you."
