The name of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى Al-Wakil translates to ‘the Ultimate trustee as well as the ultimate disposer of affairs. The meaning of Al-Wakil signifies the attribute of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى that is the Supreme and the Sole source of our being in this world and hereafter.
Due to its roots, the name Al-Wakil can have multiple meanings. The very first interpretation is to entrust someone with one's self, to submit and surrender to. The secondary meaning or connotation of this name is being a guardian of one's interests, rooting in protecting one's interests. Lastly, Al Wakil's meaning is also understood as someone to rely on.
Al-Wakil signifies that we accept our inability to do anything on our own, so we entrust Him with everything in our lives, as He is the ultimate trustee and guardian for every matter. As humans, we are incapable in front of His Mastery. The meaning of Al-Wakil is also understood in the relevance of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى being the Sustainer, Who has the custody of this world and that He is the sustainer who is sufficient for us. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى testifies to this in the Quran: "And trust in Allah, and Allah suffices as Protector” (Quran, 4:81, 33:3).
Whosoever relies on Allahسُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى will find Him sufficient for all their affairs, and Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى will make them sufficient in the life in this world and hereafter. To be able to do so, it requires one to be high in their faith and have the conviction that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is Sufficient for them. This is also mentioned in the Quran in the following verse: “But it increased them in faith, and they said, “Sufficient for us is Allahسُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs” (Quran 3:173)
The hadith of the Prophet Muhammad can understand the meaning of the name Al-Wakil and its significance ﷺ as narrated by Anas bin Malik and reported in Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2517 that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Shall I tie it and rely (upon Allah), or leave it loose and rely (upon Allah)?" He said: "Tie it and rely upon Allah". This hadith affirms that it is Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى Who is Al-Wakil and disposer of our affairs, but it is not that one should stop doing or fulfilling their responsibilities.
When one accepts the fact that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is the Sole trustee that we have, one stops relying on the worldly sources of comfort and is liberated from the stresses that it attaches and associates to time. knowing Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى as Al-Wakil is one’s testament that whatever hurdle we encounter in our lives or a challenge that we have to face, Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is there with us.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى with the name Al-Wakil and recited the invoking Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى for His help in the battle of Uhud. The battle of Uhud was when the giant army of the opposition heavily outnumbered Muslims. Not only were 70 Muslims killed, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was also injured, and this prayer was revealed in Surah Imran in the following verse: "Those to whom hypocrites said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.' But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, 'Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs” (Quran 3:173)
Life is synonymous with struggles and there is no promise that we won't have struggles in our life when we strive for things. There will always be hardships, but in times of test, we need to make a personal effort, make supplication, and let it on the will of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى. This reality is affirmed in the verses that "for each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves" (Quran 13:11)
The Quran mentions the name Al-Wakil with the name Al-Haseeb, which means The Reckoner and The Sufficer, and Al-Qadeer, meaning The All-Powerful. These names reflect the same meaning that Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى is the Sole provider and that He is the One that we have to turn to for everything we need or want in this life and life hereafter.
In the Holy Quran, the name Al-Wakil reiterates the concept that it is only Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى we are to rely on for everything that there is as His existence encompasses everything in this world and beyond. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى reassures us that He is Al-Wakeel so that we find comfort that He is looking after us in every moment of our existence. The following verse of the Quran can understand this: "And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs" (Quran 4:132).
The Oneness and His attribute of being the guardian of everything, which is one of the meanings of Al-Wakil, is further mentioned in this verse:" [He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs" (Quran 73:9).
Quran reminds us that one should take responsibility for the actions themselves and strive towards what is righteous, leaving the outcome in Allah’s hands. In the Quran, the verse "That is Allah, your Lord; there is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. And He is Disposer of all things" (Quran 6:102) mentions that we have to consistently rely on Him for everything we do.
