The literal meaning of Al-Mubdi is The Originator, the starter, and the initiator.
The root word of Al-Mubdi is ba-dal-hamza (ب د أ). It has the following classical Arabic connotations:
The name Al-Mubdi does not appear directly in the Quran. It has appeared in various derived forms. Two examples are as follows:
Allah-Al-Mubdi is the originator of all creations in the universe. The perfect originator who does what He wants to do. He does not need any role model to build something new for the first time. He is the one who initiates and creates all things. Allah creates everything, and He Himself has no creator. Everything originates from Him, and He Himself has no origin. In Surah Ar-Rum Verse 11, Allah says:
ٱللَّهُ يَبْدَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُۥ ثُمَّ إِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ
It is Allah Who creates the creation and will resurrect it. And then to Him, you will all be returned.
In another verse in the Quran, Allah says:
أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ كَيْفَ يُبْدِئُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ يَسِيرٌۭ
Have they not seen how Allah originates the creation and then resurrects it? That is certainly easy for Allah. (Quran-29:19)
The name Al-Mubdi reflects that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is the starter. He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) has created the earth, the life, and everything necessary to live. This name is a reminder for the believer, a wake-up call to ponder upon his creator and to reflect upon his life. Life is the most significant manifestation of Al-Mubdi. Every single breath, the inhalation of oxygen, the exhalation of carbon dioxide, the way every cell of the body respires, and the dead and worn-out cells are shed off from the body signifies the unique creation of Al-Mubdi. Indeed, Allah-Al-Mubdi is giving us existence at every moment. We should reflect on this attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and realize His blessings. We should be grateful to Him for His blessings every time.
You can use the name Al-Mubdi in your daily prayers. When you feel difficulty or need guidance to start something new, call out Al-Mubdi. Ask Allah-Al-Mubdi to bless you and show you the righteous path. Make Dhikr of this name when you seek new ventures in life. Seeking help from Al-Mubdi humbles oneself that nothing is in my control; success comes from the divine decree. Reflecting upon these attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) helps us to build a strong relationship with Him.
In the age of technology, Life has become very fast and busy. We get no time to reflect upon life and do a self-analysis. Undoubtedly, technology was meant to ease our lives, not enslave us. If we reflect on our lives closely, we will see how Allah-Al-Mubdi impacts our lives. When we get ill, He recovers us. Now, with the help of science and technology, we know that recovery involves removing dead cells and creating new cells to compensate for the loss. All these processes are done in our body, and we don’t get a chance to cherish the moment, to enjoy the blessing. Alas! We need to set our priorities. Pondering upon these attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) increases our belief in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). When we make dua while firmly believing in the attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), it not only increases the chances of acceptance but also contents our hearts. We can read the name Al-Mubdi whenever we need His help.
Read the name Al-Mubdi when you start something new and need Allah’s guidance. Ask Allah-Al-Mubdi to show you the right path and help you in this new venture. Similarly, you can recite this name when you feel stuck in life and pray: Oh Allah-Al-Mubdi, The Originator, please originate a way out for me from this problem and help me restart my life with your guidance and blessings. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) indeed answers the prayers of the believer. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in the Quran:
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ
And your Lord has said, ‘Invoke Me, and I will respond to you.’ (Quran 40:60)
It is said that the one who remembers his origin stays passionate and directed in life. He knows where he has come from and where he has to go. So, it becomes easier for him to have a purposeful and meaningful life. We all know that Allah, being Al-Mubdi, is the originator of our life, and we all will return to Him. Keeping this in mind and incorporating this into our daily life helps us stay consistent towards our goal, i.e., to worship Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). When we know the origin and the destination, the journey becomes easy and meaningful. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in the Quran:
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُون
I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me. (Quran 51;56)
Al-Mubdi is the name of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) that reflects His attribute of being the Originator, the Initiator, and the Starter. It is recommended to name children after the names of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). But it is better to add Abdul before the attribute of Allah. The literal meaning of Abdul is “the slave or servant of.” It helps to cultivate Islamic values in the next generation.
The names of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) with the same meaning as Al-Mubdi are:
Al-Mubdi is the one who creates something first with no role model, whereas the meaning of Al-Mu’id is the restorer. Both of these words make a good combination and are often used together. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in the Quran:
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ
For He is undoubtedly the One Who originates and resurrects all. (Quran 85:13)
Many Quranic verses mention the Al-Mubdi attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Allah-Al-Mubdi is the originator of life, and we will return to Him. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says in the Quran:
أَمَّن يَبْدَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُۥ وَمَن يَرْزُقُكُم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ أَءِلَـٰهٌۭ مَّعَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ قُلْ هَاتُوا۟ بُرْهَـٰنَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
Or ask them, “Who originates the creation then resurrects it, and gives you provisions from the heavens and the earth? Is it another god besides Allah?” Say, ˹O Prophet, show me your proof, if what you say is true.” (Quran-27:64)
On another occasion in the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) says that just as we create them for the first time, we will reproduce them.
On that Day, We, will roll up the heavens like a scroll of writings. Just as We, produced the first creation, so shall We reproduce it. That is a promise binding on Us. We truly uphold our promises! (Quran 21:104)
