Al-Mudhill
Allah is Al Muzil, The Dishonorer, The Disgracer, The Degrader and The Humiliator. Allah humiliates those who disbelieve or disobey him. Once a man is digraced by Allah, he will never be honoured.
From the root dh-l-l which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to be low, base, abject, paltry, to be vile, contemptible, despicable, to be inglorious, abased, humble, to be lowly, submissive, weak, to be tractable, easy, and manageable.
Say, “O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent. (Quran 3:26)
But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates – for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills. (Quran 22:18)
Indeed, the ones who oppose Allah and His Messenger – those will be among the most humbled. (Quran 58:20)

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is Al-Mudhil or Al-Muzhil which literally translates to the giver of Dishonour, humiliation, or disgrace. For a believer, nothing occurs without the complete will of Allah. He honors whomever he wills and provides them with success and esteem. However, Allah also degrades and humiliates whomever he wills – He is the Supreme authority.
Some of the most known examples of those who were humiliated include Iblees and Abu Lahab – they were disgraced because of their unacceptable actions by the ultimate will and power of Allah.
Although no surah or verse in the Quran mentions the name Al-Mudhil, the attitude of Allah to humiliate, disgrace, and degrade whoever he wills has been mentioned and implicated in several Surahs in the Quran.
Allah says in the Quran:
"Say, 'O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, you give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, you are over all things competent." — (3:26)
Allah also says:
"So, Allah made them taste disgrace in worldly life. But the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew." — (39:26)
Al-Mudhil is also connected with accountability. There is no doubt everyone, good or bad, will meet the consequences of their actions by Allah. Those who stray away from Allah, are wrongdoers, and hypocrites will meet Allah’s wrath on the day of judgement and be faced with humiliation and disgrace.
Allah says in the Quran:
"The hypocrites will call to the believers, “Were we not with you?” They will say, “Yes, but you afflicted yourselves and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah. So today no ransom will be taken from you or from those who disbelieved. Your refuge is the Fire. It is most worthy of you, and wretched is the destination.” (57:14-15)
Therefore, the name should also serve as a reminder and warning for believers to turn to Allah before it’s too late because if He wills, he can humiliate and disgrace his creation.
Al-Mudhill serves as a reminder for the believers of the ultimate Supremacy and authority of Allah. Just as he provides one with success, grace, and honour, he can also take it away in an instant. This should serve as a reminder to be cautious of one’s actions and always be grateful to Allah.
Moreover, including this name in dhikr can be prevent from dangerous feelings of enmity, envy, and tyranny.
The recitation of Al-Mudhill can be included in one’s daily dhikr as dhikr is the most convenient form of worship that can be performed at any time of the day no matter what chore or task one is indulged in, he/she can do dhikr simultaneously. However, it has been recommended to recite Al-Mudhil 128 times after each prayer.
While it is not necessary to recite it at a specific time or place, it is recommended to establish a specific routine for whichever dhikr one wishes to recite. To prevent forgetfulness or laziness, recite the dhikr at the same time every day by incorporating it into your daily routine. For example, after each daily prayer.
One can also try and incorporate the name in their daily conversations. For example, by teaching others, such as children the deep meaning of the name and significance it carries for a Muslim.
The opposite of Al-Mudhil – Al-Muizz (the honourer) is a common boys name in Arabic.
Along with Al-Muizz, Al-Rafi is another one of Allah’s names with a similar meaning to Al-Mudhill. Al-Rafi is the One who lowers whoever he wills and elevates and provides prestige to whoever he wills, as well.
This is implied in the Quran:
"And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing." (6:83).
However, the name bearing the closest similarity to Al-Mudhill is Al-Khafid which translates to the Abaser/reducer. Emphasizing again on the fact that Allah will reduce and abase whoever he will and raise in status whoever he wills, also.
Allah says in the Quran:
“Abasing (one party), exalting (the other)” (Qur’an, 56:3)
This emphasizes how some transgressors, disbelievers, and wrongdoers will be abased and punished for their actions while some, who choose to follow the righteous path of Allah will be exalted (for example, in Jannah).
Allah says in the Quran:
“There is not one of you but will pass over it (Hell); this is with your Lord, a Decree which must be accomplished. Then We shall save those who use to fear Allah and were dutiful to Him. And We shall leave the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers) therein (humbled) to their knees (in Hell)” (19:71-72)
