Al-Mu'izz

The Giver of Honor

Al-Mu'izz

He gives esteem to whoever He willed, hence there is no one to degrade Him; And He degrades whoever He willed, hence there is no one to give Him esteem.

Allah is Aziz (possessor of glory) and Mu’izz (giver of glory). He gives strength and honor to his obedient and loving servants. He gives material power to whoever he wills. He strengthens, glorifies, and makes it possible for someone or something to be respected.

Al-Mu’izz Definition & Meaning

As believers, there must never be any doubt in our hearts and minds that whatever we possessed in the past, do possess, and will possess is from Allah alone. May it be respect, honor, success, might, or grace. If Allah wills, he will provide us with honor, with no one to take it away or degrade it, but also dishonor whom he wills.

If Allah will, He will provide us with shelter, clothing, health, prestige, and honor. He will strengthen us, glorify us, and make it possible for us to be respected in the eyes of the world. However, we will be held accountable if we disobey Him or earn His wrath.

Al-Mu’izz is similar yet opposite to another one of Allah’s blessed names—Al-Mudhill translates to the Giver of dishonor. Another emphasizes the fact that Allah will provide one with honor but also has the supremacy and ability to take it away.

Although Al-Mu’izz has not been mentioned in the Quran, several verses have implied and emphasized its true meaning, clearly stating that Allah alone has the power to glorify and honor one.

Allah says in the Quran:

"Say, “O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, you give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, you are overall things competent." – (3:26)

Another verse in which Allah emphasizes His will to provide His creation with higher degrees:

"So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion of the king except that Allah willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.” (12:76).

Al-Mu’izz is a blessed name that should serve as a reminder to believers to be watchful of their actions, never dare to become arrogant, and never let themselves get so lost in their worldly desires that they forget that whatever they have comes from Allah and can be taken away in an instant.

Allah also says in the Quran:

"Whoever desires honor [through power] – then to Allah belongs all honor. To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it. But they who plot evil deeds will have a severe punishment, and the plotting of those – it will perish." (35:10)

This verse also warns believers to be good in their speech and get close to Allah if they wish to gain honor through power. However, if one is evil and indulges in wrongful deeds, Allah will indeed hold them accountable for them.

Since Allah gives honor through one of his many attributes, it is also a major sin to unjustly wrong or insult another Muslim's honor. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, narrated by Abu Hurayrah:

“The gravest sin is going to lengths in talking unjustly against a Muslim's honor, and it is a major sin to abuse twice for abusing once” - (Sunan Abi Dawud 4877)

Benefits of Al-Mu’izz

  • The name offers an opportunity for a believer to reflect upon the many attributes of Allah truly, and understanding the divine essence of Allah's name can help a believer get close to Allah. The more one understands His attributes, authority, and supremacy, the closer he gets to His Lord.

  • It is recommended to recite Al-Mu’izz after maghrib prayer every prayer to elevate one’s honor, dignity, and respect. However, to earn blessings, one can incorporate the name into their daily dhikr routine and recite the name in the mornings to evenings.

  • To establish consistency in dhikr, one must establish a set routine and stick to it. For example, reciting the dhikr every day at the same time helps prevent forgetfulness.

  • Moiz, a Muslim boy's name, also originates from Allah's name, Al-Mu’izz. If a believer wishes, they can name their child Moiz to seek further blessings; if Allah wills, he will bless their child with respect, honor, and dignity.

Names of Allah with the Same Meaning as Al-Mu’izz

Ar-Rafi is another of Allah's blessed names. It translates to the Exalter or the Elevator. Similar to Al Mu’izz, it also means Allah is the one who raises in rank and honors whoever he wills and lowers in status or honors whoever he wills.

Allah says in the Quran:

"And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing." (6:83)

Allah also says in the Quran:

"[He is] the Exalted above [all] degrees, Owner of the Throne; He places the inspiration of His command upon whom He wills of His servants to warn of the Day of Meeting." (40:15)

Therefore, one must be watchful of arrogance, ungratefulness, and disobedience of Allah as he indeed is the only one who can elevate and lower one’s honor.

More Mentions in the Quran about Al-Mu’izz

Al-Mu’izz, although it has never explicitly been mentioned in the Quran, several verses emphasize its meaning.

For instance, Allah says in the Quran:

They say, "If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble." And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and the believers, but the hypocrites do not know. (63:8)

The attribute of Allah to bless His creation with honor has been mentioned several times in the Quran and should repeatedly serve as a reminder to the believer about Allah’s countless power and authority over His creation.
