Al-Warith
Allah is Al-Warith, The One who remains after all has past. He is everlasting and whom all possessions will be returned to.
From the root w-r-th which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to inherit to be an heir, survivor to be the owner or sustainer after someone.
And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor. (Quran 15:23)
Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned. (Quran 19:40)
And why do you not spend in the cause of Allah while to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth? Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought [and those who did so after it]. Those are greater in degree than they who spent afterwards and fought. But to all Allah has promised the best [reward]. And Allah, with what you do, is Acquainted. (Quran 57:10)

Al-Warith is one of the 99 names of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى), and it highlights that it is only Allah who will live forever and everything in this world and beyond will end. He alone is the inheritor of everything He created - the heavens, the earth, and everything in it. He (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) created everything, and no one shares anything with Him, and everything in this world and the heavens is a creation of Allah that is temporary. All the possessions, power, and legacy belong to Allah only, and everything and everyone will return to Him (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى).
The egoistic Kings and Rulers who rule the world, thinking it as their property, are all to be returned to the Mighty Power, and anyone who did unjust with even a single person will be held accountable on the day of judgment. It will be Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) who will be the Judge of all judges, kings, and rulers who think they are answerable to no one.
Humans are more attached to worldly things that concern the life of the hereafter. The name Al-Warith teaches us humility and prevents us from being materialistic, even after knowing that everything in the world is temporary and no one will carry these materials to the next world. Al-Warith reminds us that nothing belongs to us, and we should spend our lives in a way that pleases Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Reciting the name Al-Warith during distress can give comfort and help us understand that everything ultimately returns to the One who is eternal and the most just.
In Surah Al-Hijr, Allah says:
وَاِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُـحْيٖ وَنُمِيْتُ وَنَحْنُ الْوٰرِثُوْنَ
Translation: “It is We who give life and We who give death, and We are the one who will abide.” (Quran 15:23)
In another Surah, Surah Maryam, Allah calls himself the Inheritor.
اِنَّا نَحْنُ نَرِثُ الْاَرْضَ وَمَنْ عَلَيْہَا وَاِلَيْنَا يُرْجَعُوْنَۧ
Translation: “Verily We who shall inherit the earth and whosoever is on it, and to Us they will return.” (Quran 19:40)
Al-Warith is mentioned third time in Surah Maryam, where Allah says:
وَّنَرِثُہٗ مَا يَقُوْلُ وَيَاْتِيْنَا فَرْدًا
Translation: “All that he claims will revert to Us, and he will come before Us all alone.” Quran (19:80)
The name Al-Warith defines the attribute of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) as the One who remains when everything else will cease one day. Allah created His creations, but He remains the supreme power and the One to whom everything belongs. We run after money and worldly things even after knowing the fact that it is all temporary and we all have to return to Him with empty hands. No belongings of this world will enter the next except your good deeds.
The name Al-Warith teaches us humility, reminds us not to be overly attached to worldly things, and prevents us from loving temporary material things. Rather, this name encourages us to obey Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) and use our wealth, time, and resources in a way that pleases Allah because everything, including time, wealth, and resources, is His greatest blessings provided to us.
Reciting Al-Warith as tasbih during a loss can be beneficial to bring sabr. When we call upon Allah as the one who inherits all, it tells us nothing belongs to us, and everything, and everyone will surely return to Allah one day. Even during financial loss, when you recite Al-Warith, you get the feeling of belonging to Allah, and it is He who takes away, and it is only He who gives you in abundance. When you recite Al-Warith, you give authority to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) as the creator of the world to take charge of your life. And, it is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) alone who works always in our favor, either by taking away or by giving something to us.
At times of loss, we are taught this dua by our Prophet (ﷺ):
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
Translation: “...We are from Allah and unto Him we return...” (Sunan an-Nasa’i Book 35, Hadith 1)
The name Al-Warith signifies that Allah is the only inheritor of everything that exists. He is the One who is in power and is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. People today run after money and create wealth and property without realizing that, in the end, it is Allah to whom they will return empty-handed. Taqwa will help them succeed in life hereafter and not the wealth they are busy collecting.
The name Al-Warith serves as a reminder that everything in the world is temporary and this world and its so-called luxuries will end one day. On the day of judgment, every living being will taste death, and only Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) will be there to judge us all and wake us up once again for eternal life. Reciting the name Al-Warith creates a sense of gratitude and responsibility in our lives, helping us understand the power of Allah. It helps us create a deeper connection with the Almighty and encourages us to perform good deeds that please Allah.
Calling Allah by His name, Al-Warith strengthens our trust in Allah and His plans, helping us overcome the worry of the future, wealth, and leaving behind worldly things. The name Al-Warith reminds us that Allah is the only One who controls our lives and sustains us with everything.
When we call Allah by His different names, it helps us learn the qualities of Allah and increases our imaan and trust. It also helps us understand the meaning of life at a deeper level and motivates us to focus on the eternal hereafter life rather than the temporary worldly one. Al-Warith means that everything belongs to Allah and He alone is sufficient.
Reciting Ya-Warith repeatedly can help in find relief, strengthen our faith, and increase our trust in Allah. It helps us reflect on the temporary life of this world and prepare for the afterlife by doing good deeds. Reciting the tasbih of Ya-Warith guides us in managing our responsibilities, decreases our concern for wealth, and makes us concerned about eternal life after death.
In Surah Anbiya, Allah says while mentioning Him as the Inheritor:
وَزَكَرِيَّاۗ اِذْ نَادٰي رَبَّہٗ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِيْ فَرْدًا وَّاَنْتَ خَيْرُ الْوٰرِثِيْنَۖ
Translation: (remember) Zachariah when he called to his Lord: “Do not leave me alone (and childless), for you are the best of givers.” (Quran 21:89)
There is no specific time to say Allah’s name and you can do it anytime with dedication. But, there are certain times in Islam for seeking blessings like the time of Fajr, around the time of Tahajjud, and in the evening. Reciting Ya-Warithu during morning and evening reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) is the ultimate inheritor, and everything, including us, is His property.
You can recite Al-Warithu if you experience loss in wealth, property, or loved ones. It reminds us that Allah will replace it with something better since Allah is the inheritor. It was narrated from Umm Salamah that Abu Salamah told her that he heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying:
“There is no Muslim who is stricken with a calamity and reacts by saying as Allah has commanded: ‘Truly to Allah, we belong and truly, to Him, we shall return. O Allah, with you I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me for it and compensate me.’ but Allah will reward him for that and compensate him with something better than it.” (Sunan Ibn Majah Book 6, Hadith 1666)
When Umm Salamah's husband passed away, she used to recite this dua and often ask, ‘How can I be compensated with something better than Abu Salamah?’ Allah rewarded her with Muhammad (ﷺ) for her calamity and showing trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى).
Al-Warith means the Inheritor of all and this name represents the attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) alone. No one on this Earth is the sole inheritor and it represents Allah’s qualities. Naming your sons as Abdul Warith, which means Slave of the Inheritor, is the best way if you want to keep this name.
