Mentions From The Quran & Hadith

From the root n-w-r which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to give light, to illuminate, to fill with light to clarify, to reveal, to make visible to blossom, to be in bloom (revealed) to be flaming, blazing and apparent to the senses to enlighten, give counsel, and give advice.

So, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Light which We have sent down. And Allah, of what you do, (is) All-Aware. (Quran 64:8)

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. (Quran 24:35)

An-Nur Definition & Meaning

The Prime Light, The One Who Guides, The Illuminator

There are moments in life when we are in dire need of guidance. Whether it is a job opportunity that we’re looking forward to or a new milestone in our life. In such times, we always turn our heads towards Allah, asking Him to guide us and make it easy. It is Him who guides whom He wills. Allah’s name as ‘An-nur’ signifies His divine ability to illuminate lives and bring guidance. This name shows His ultimate glory to be the prime light when darkness prevails in Life. His guidance is always there for every human being. Allah’s attribute, ‘An-nur,’ reflects His wisdom to bring mankind out of the pit of darkness.

Mentions from Hadith and Quran

An-nur has been mentioned several times in the Quran and Hadith. There is a whole surah dedicated to the theme of Allah’s attribute as ‘an-nur.’ The light of Allah has been described in the Holy Quran as follows:

“And when Moses arrived at Our appointed time, and his Lord spoke to him, he said, "My Lord, show me [Yourself] that I may look at You." [Allah] said, "You will not see Me, but look at the mountain; if it should remain in place, then you will see Me." But when his Lord appeared on the mountain, He rendered it level, and Moses fell unconscious. And when he awoke, he said, "Exalted are You! I have repented to You, and I am the first of the believers." (Surah Al-Araaf:143)

Similarly, in Surah Al-Anaam, Allah’s light has been beautifully described as:

“Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision; and He is the Subtle, the Acquainted.” (6: 103)

This visionary light is not like the ordinary flashing light. Allah’s nur is far beyond that. He is the guiding light that brings us out of the darkness. His light shows us to the right path. In this regard, the Prophet taught a wonderful supplication to ask Allah for His light.

“O Allah, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. O Allah, grant me light and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my hair light, and in my skin light. [O Allah, make for me a light in my grave... and a light in my bones.] [Increase me in light, increase me in light, increase me in light.] [Grant me light upon light.]” (Sunan an-Nasa'i 1121)
