It has a total population of 3.2 million, and 51% of its population follow Islam. The majority of the Muslims belong to the Sunni sect of Islam and the Hanafi school of thought. Since it also has a high number of Christians living along with Muslims, there are few cities with a higher number of Muslim population than the rest. Sarajevo, Bihac, Travnik, Tuzla, Gorazde, Zenica, Mostar, and Banja Luka are the eight cities with mainly Muslims and all these cities have their Muftis.
Islam was first introduced in Bosnia by the Ottomans in the late 15th century. They gained control of Bosnia in 1463 and of Herzegovina in 1480s. Under Ottoman rule, many Christians converted to Islam, and by the early 1600s two third of the Bosnia population were Muslims. Several mosques were built with minarets in Bosnia under Ottoman rule, such as Fethija Mosque in 1266, which was formerly a church converted to a mosque, Sisman Ibrahim Pasha Mosque in 1561, Hadzi Ahmed Dukhtar Mosque built in 1574, and many more. King Fahad Cultural Center was built in 1987 under the former king to promote Saudi culture and heritage. Today, it is a popular tourist destination.
During the Bosnian war, between 1992 to 1995, around 614 mosques were destroyed, and 307 mosques were damaged. However, with the aid of Saudi Arabia and other Muslim countries, many mosques were rebuilt. Many other buildings, including Churches, were also destroyed. The Grand Mufti of Bosnia is Husein Kavazovic and there are a total of eight muftis for the major municipalities of Bosnia.
Many Islamic international organizations like Islamic Relief work in Bosnia but the main organization is the Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a religious local organization established in 1882 by the Austria-Hungary government to control the Islamic community in Bosnia after Turkish rule faded in 1878. It’s now headed by the Grand Mufti of Bosnia – Husein Kacazovic, and has authority over all the Muslims of Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosniak.
