Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque

The Gazi Husrev mosque was built in the 16th century and is one of the most effective representatives of the Ottoman structures in the Balkans. The mosque is considered the main congregational mosque for Muslims in the country. Located in the Baščaršija area – the historical and cultural centre of the city, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is popular among visitors and tourists and is considered the main architectural building in the neighbourhood.

The mosque also carries great historical significance as it was built in 1530 as it was built as a building of the Beg's endowment and also includes a maktab and a madrassa. There have been different opinions regarding the architect behind the mosque. While some identify the popular architect Mimar Sinar as the one who designed the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the majority of scholars agree that the Ottoman mimar of the Persian ancestor – Acem Ali was most likely the architect of the mosque. The mosque has a traditional old-style Ottoman architecture with a main dome, a simple yet monumental minaret, and a portico resting on four columns and covered by little domes.

Ali Pasha Mosque

The Ali Pasha Mosque was constructed in 1560-61 during the statesmanship of Sofu Hadim Ali Pasha as an endowment. The mosque has a classic Ottoman-style architecture, with one dome covering the prayer area and three smaller domes covering the corridor.

The mosque was severely damaged during the Bosnian War in the 1990s by Serbian Forces. However, it has been renovated several times since, with the most recent renovation taking place in 2004. The courtyard of the mosque contains Ali Pasha's tomb, along with graves for several prominent personalities of Bosnia.

Istiklal Mosque

The Istiklal Mosque is named after the Istiklal Mosque of Jakarta, Indonesia. The mosque was a gift from the Indonesian government and people to Bosnia and Herzegovina to commemorate the friendship between the two nations. Istiklal translates to "independence" in Arabic. Thus, the mosque was also a testament to celebrating the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Along with five obligatory prayers, the mosque is also known to host Eid prayers in the congregation. The Istiklal mosque also operates a maktab (elementary school) inside its premises and Quran recital competitions. It also organizes Sharia weddings (nikkah) and is considered an Indonesian Cultural centre within Sarajevo.

The mosque includes Indonesian and Islamic architectural elements within its building design. It's built with simplistic geometric elements and patterns on metal works made from stainless and aluminium. The window frames on the interior are decorated with Indonesian carvings of floral ornaments. Istiklal Mosque also offers educational tours that delve into the history and significance of Islam in Bosnia.
