Although Islam is a minority religion in Greece, Muslims comprise around 0.91% of the overall population, with approximately 140,000 Muslims residing in the country, including Alevi Muslims. Alevi Muslims present in Greece are majorly descendants of the officially recognized Muslim minority concerning the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. Moreover, Albanian Muslims also make up a significant number of the Muslim population in the country. An Indigenous community of Muslims, approximately 120,000, is also present in Thrace.
Muslims are predominantly present in the city of Rhodes and on the Island of Kos, especially in the Platanos village. The Pomaks (Bulgarian-speaking Muslims) are mostly settled in compact villages in Western Thrace's Rhodope Mountain areas. The majorly dominant Roma community is also majorly Muslim. A small Muslim community also resides in the Dodecanese Islands. However, the capital city of Athens also hosts a significant number of the Muslim population. The Muslims present in Athens, however, are mostly comprised of migrants.

Although Islam is a minority religion in Greece – Shariah law is applicable in two scenarios – first in the case of private international law when foreign law may have to govern or legislate law relating to families and their relations that may be religious. The second case is about Greece only as it is the only country in the European Union that has allowed Sharia courts to operate on its territory. The Shariah law, in history, was mandatory for Muslim citizens residing in Greece, mostly due to the Ottoman era. However, its reinforcement was predated by the Lausanne Treaty in 1923.
Although the construction of mosques in Muslim minority cities has been challenging due to Islamophobic elements in the country, the Muslim population of Greece, over the years, has managed to gain some success in building places of worship for themselves.
