Kilwa Sultanate was founded by Ali ibn al-Hassan Shirzai in the 10th century, and since then, Islam has been in the hands of ruling elites in the region. Under Portuguese colonial rule, Islam faced challenges. Roman Catholicism became the dominant religion through a formal alliance (Concordat) with the government and the state actively opposed Islam. However, it later shifted its stance after the War of Liberation.
Since the end of the socialist period, from 1989 onwards, Muslims have had the freedom to practice their religion.
