Islamic History and Culture of Mozambique

Mozambique is a Christian dominant country and Muslims represent a minority. Islam was introduced in the region by Swahili coast merchants back in the 4th century and later by Sufi merchants from Yemen. Many years later, Ibadi Muslims from Oman also settled along coastal trading cities.

Kilwa Sultanate was founded by Ali ibn al-Hassan Shirzai in the 10th century, and since then, Islam has been in the hands of ruling elites in the region. Sofala, which was part of the Kilwa Sultanate, became the most important city of the region for its trade in ivory, timber, gold, iron, and slaves with the Middle East and India.

Under Portuguese colonial rule, Islam faced challenges. Roman Catholicism became the dominant religion through a formal alliance (Concordat) with the government and the state actively opposed Islam. However, it later shifted its stance after the War of Liberation.

Since the end of the socialist period, from 1989 onwards, Muslims have had the freedom to practice their religion. They were able to construct new mosques and participate in political and parliamentary institutions. Today, Muslims form 17.5% of the total population and have several mosques across the country.
