Uganda Cities with Muslim Population

Islam is a known religion in Uganda, followed by 14% of the population. They live in small and big communities in different districts of Uganda. In the district of Yumbe, Muslims form a majority and reflect 76% of the total population. While in Mayuge, they represent 36% of the population of the district, and in Lganga, 34% of the population are Muslims. In Kayunga district, Muslims share 25.8% of the population, Jinja District 26%, Bugiri District 24%, Kampala District 22.6, Masaka District and Mukono District 21% of the total population. The rest of the districts share less than 20%, and few even have hardly 1% of Muslims residing. 

Islamic Culture and Heritage in Uganda

Islam was introduced in Uganda back in 1884 by Arab traders. At that time, Buganda Kingdom was the most powerful Kingdom in the country, and its preachers and rulers started converting to Islam. Muteesa 1, the 30th Kabaka of the Kingdom of Buganda, declared Islam as the state religion of his Kingdom, later carried forward by his successor son.

The Muslims started spreading in Uganda under the Buganda Kingdom. In the north of the country, Islam gained recognition under the rule of Khedive of Egypt, who later came under British colonial administrator Federick Lugard. Islam spread the fastest during the colonial period in the 1950s; mosques and Muslim organizations were established in the country, and madrasas were introduced.

Uganda National Mosque in Kampala is one of the country's most famous mosques, while Kasubi Mateesa - Royal Mosque is said to be the oldest mosque in Uganda.

Islamic Community Services and Organizations in Uganda

Islam is spread across Uganda, sharing most of the population in eastern and central parts of the country. Several organizations are now working for the Muslims of Uganda, helping them with financial, social, and moral support. A few of the prominent names are:

  1. MCCESS Uganda: The Muslim Community Center for Economic and Social Services is a humanitarian organization working in Uganda to provide support in relief funds and developmental activities for the Muslim community in the country. 

  2. BUGISU Uganda: BUGISU Muslim Development Center is a non-governmental organization working for the benefit of Muslims of Uganda. It focuses on developmental activities to improve the quality of life of Muslims and other people in the country's rural areas. 

  3. UMEA: Uganda Muslim Education Association is a registered organization that plays the role of foundation body of all the Islamic schools and institutions in Uganda. 

Islamic Festivals and Events in Uganda

Muslims of Uganda celebrate all the religious festivals and events with enthusiasm. Starting with their New Year from the 1st of Muharram, followed by Prophet Muhammad’s birthday celebration on the 12th Rabbi-Awwal. Muslims of Uganda fast for the month of Ramadan and celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their families and friends in the month of Shawaal. They bid farewell to the year by performing Hajj and celebrating Eid-ul-Adha in the last month of the Islamic calendar, waiting for another Hijirah year to start with peace and prosperity.

Halal Dining and Food Options in Uganda

Halal food and dining options are found across Uganda. In the central and eastern parts, many halal restaurants are available to serve different cuisines. You will easily find Indian, Lebanese, and Asian halal cuisines available across the districts, with a majority of the Muslim population. Khana Khazana, which a famous Indian chef owns, is available in Kampala and other famous restaurants like Asian Fusion for Chinese and Indian food, Cafe Javas for European food, and Meza for Lebanese food.

It's best to check for a Halal certificate when dining in or buying groceries from Halal stores to ensure the food you serve is prepared according to the laws of Islam. 

Islamic Education and Institutions in Uganda

Uganda is home to many practicing Muslims who take their religion seriously. Several Islamic institutions are available that serve solely religious education, along with institutions that provide Islamic and modern academic education. A few of the prominent institutions are:

  • IUIU: Established in 1988, Islamic University in Uganda offers diplomas and degrees in Islamic studies, Arabic language, Law, Science, Liberal arts, and Social Sciences.

  • Al-Mustafa Islamic College: Located in Kajjansi and licensed by the National Council for Higher Education, Al-Mustafa Islamic College provides education in all disciplines, including IT, business, Islamic Studies, and many others.
