Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, home to 15 million people. It's a Christian-dominant country with Muslims living in the minority. There are hardly 1% of the population recognized as Muslims. However, there are no restrictions on anyone, including Muslims, to practice their faith and build worship places like mosques and even community centers. There are several beautiful cities in Zimbabwe, but there are only a few where Muslims live forming communities, including:
Harare: It is the capital of Zimbabwe and holds Africa's cultural and heritage history. Many Muslims live close by, forming a community. There are around six mosques located in different parts of the city for Muslims to worship freely.
Bulawayo: Located in the southwest of Zimbabwe, this city is the country's industrial center. As the second largest city in Zimbabwe, it has a diverse culture and is home to many Muslims living in the region. It also has mosques located in different locations to cater to Muslim communities.
Mutare: Located in the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe, Mutare is a very beautiful city with a substantial Muslim population. It has three mosques in different areas where the Muslim communities worship and organize religious events.
Gweru: It is the central city of Zimbabwe, originally known as Gwelo. A small population of Muslims live in the city and have a mosque to worship within the community.
Zimbabwe is a Christian-majority country. It has around only 120 thousand Muslims living country-wide. As it is a secular country, Muslims are free to worship their religion and build their worship places. Muslims are only 1% in the country and are mainly immigrants from South Asian countries, including India and Pakistan. Only a few are converted Muslims from Zimbabwe and also immigrants from the African Yao and Malawi tribes.
Zimbabwe is home to a current famous Muslim scholar Mufti Menk and a famous cricketer Sikandar Raza. Ismail Ibn Musa Menk is the Grand Mufti of Zimbabwe.
Muslims do live as a minority in Zimbabwe, but Islamic organizations are working for the living standard and support of the Muslim community in the country. Here are a few notable ones:
Anadolu Ajansi: It's a charity organization helping the Muslim community in Zimbabwe improve their living standards.
Islamic Relief: It is an international organization working for Muslims worldwide, including Zimbabwe. It provides relief funds and supports Muslims in living better lives.
Muslim Burial Society: Harare's non-profit organization provides essential burial services according to Islamic traditions. It works on donations and volunteer work.
Halal dining places and food are a challenge to find across Zimbabwe. However, the cities with a notable Muslim population have few Halal options available. In the capital city of Harare, you can find many halal places that serve traditional and international foods, especially Indian and Pakistani cuisines. A well-known international chain, Nandos services halal food in Harare.
It's best to check for the Halal Certificate the Zimbabwe Halal Council issued to ensure the food you are served is prepared according to Islamic laws and regulations.
