There are several authentic hadiths where this simple sunnah/dua is narrated that every Muslim should remember upon sneezing. In Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 934 Jabir ibn 'Abdullah reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said "When one of you sneezes let him say: 'Alhamdulillah (praise be to Allah)' and whoever hears him say: 'Yarhamukallah (may Allah have mercy on you)' then let him say: 'Yuhdikumullaahu wa yuslihu baalakum (may Allah guide you and rectify your condition).'"

It is reported that Abu Hurairah narrated that when the Prophet (ï·º) would sneeze, he would cover his face with his hand or with his garment and muffle the sound with it. (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2745).

It also reminds us of our mortality because life has been given by Allah and we should strive to live by what would please him.
