With a 100% Muslim population, mosques are bustling with congregations of men and women at prayer times in Riyadh. These mosques are not only architecturally outstanding but also historically significant to the city. Most Muslims in Riyadh prefer their favorite Imams and reciters and love to stand behind them in congregational prayers. Riyadh is the capital and the largest city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
It is located in a historically and religiously significant region near the site of Al-Hijr, where Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ) gave his last sermon. Riyadh is now a cultural and economic center of the country and a significant hub of Islamic culture and heritage. Friday (Jummah), Ramadan Tarawih, and Eid congregational prayers are all central to each Mosque in Riyadh. Several even hold late congregations out of convenience for those working or about to miss their prayers.
Al-Rajhi mosque, built by the Al Rajhi Family, is a well-recognized landmark of Riyadh. It is the largest Mosque in Riyadh, an architectural marvel, and the most significant Islamic institution in the city. It is said that the grandness of the structure can only be experienced by visiting the Mosque. The facade of the Mosque is made up of traditional rock-based tiles, reminiscent of the classic design of mosques. It is a popular, crowded place, especially on the nights of Ramadan. The Mosque can accommodate about 18,000 worshippers, including 2,500 in the women’s section. There are two libraries within the Mosque’s complex, and its institute offers forensic science courses to eager learners.
King Khalid Grand Mosque is considerably modern, with ornate designs and high arches in the interior. Located in the Ummul Hammam area, the Mosque can accommodate a total of 100,000 worshippers in its incredibly spacious facility. Regular worshippers are mainly attracted by the wonderful recitation of Sheikh Khalid Julail. However, the architecture is no less credited with attracting visitors and worshippers to the Mosque. With a white exterior and interior, the Mosque stands with a low dome and a single minaret, depicting modern architectural designs. The Mosque organizes educational lectures as well as Quran memorization (Hifz) programs for the seekers. It is also available for funeral prayers.
Completed in 2017, Al Jawhara Al Batain Grand Mosque is a modern architectural mosque design with distinct, unique features. While the framework of the Mosque’s design remains traditional, its advanced features take into consideration the wind and sun patterns. Designed by the architect Saleh Alluhaidan, the Al Babtain Mosque is rectangular-shaped, with a modern style of engravings all around and over the Mosque. The Mosque features two minarets and a spacious main prayer hall with low-hanging light fixtures. The rest of the interior, including marbled pathways and golden carpets, reminds the worshipper of the Islamic concept of Nūr. The recitation and voice of Imam Nasser al-Asfour attract frequent worshippers from its surroundings and the rest of Riyadh.
With unique architecture, Ad Dakheel mosque is a popular location among immigrants and locals alike for its Jumm’ah prayers. With most prayers being mainly headed by Imam Yaser Al Dosary, who has been the youngest Imam and Khateeb of Masjid Al Haram, it attracted many from all around the world to stand in congregation behind him. The congregational prayers are now mainly headed by Sheikh Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Qaseer.
The Mosque was built during the reign of Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Saud, the founder of the second Saudi state, and was later named after him. Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Mosque consists of separate main prayer halls for men and women and a 4,800 square meter courtyard available for additional worshippers. A total of 17,000 worshippers can be accommodated in the entire mosque complex. Wooden beamed ceilings at the rear part of the courtyard bear the lighting units and amplifiers.
The Mosque has two 50-meter high minarets at the northern and southern sides of the Mosque, featuring traditional architectural designs. Before their redevelopment, they featured a mix of Ottoman and Egyptian styles. They were later rebuilt in rectangular neo-Najdi style, including a resurfaced marble courtyard and modernized porticos. Other facilities of the Mosque include two separate/segregated 325-m2 libraries.
With a unique, magnificent architectural style, Princess Latifah Mosque is a widely known mosque frequented by local and international tourists. It is popular among the locals for its Tarawih prayers. The facilities within the Mosque are well-kept, with regulars praising its availability of water at all times. It also has a considerably spacious and clean area designated for women. Many frequent visitors have also noted and praised its pleasant perfume of incense in the prayer halls of the Mosque.
